( Killer Of Husband Adjudged Sane RIVERSIDE, Calif.. Dec. 21 MP) A jury, returning shortly 1 before midnight last night, found Mrs. Sophie Petrillo, 35, sane when she shot and killed her hus band, Peter, 35, in their Palm Springs apartment last Sept. 19 She screamed at the verdict ! and had to be partly carried from the courtroom. Last week the same jury convicted her of sec ond' degree murder of her plea ol ' Innocent. She was elven a second trial on ! her plea of innocent by reason of insanity. By being found sane, she will be subject to the second degree murder penalty of five years to life imprisonment. The court set sentencing for Jan. 6. Had she been found Insane, she would have been committed to a state hospital instead of a prison. The prosecution asserted that Mrs. Petrillo killed her husbanj because of jealousy over Alma Ross Prima, 30-year-old dancer and ex-wife of Bandleader Louis Prima. She had confronted her husband in Mrs. Prima's apart ment the night before the shoot ing. Mrs. Prima testified that Pe trillo, a night club operator, was discussing a business matter with her when Mrs. Petrillo found them. M. Gilbreath, guard Ian of Robert Lee Gilbreath, a minor, who was injured ;n an au tomobile collision last July 15. Gordon Carlson, one of the at torneys for the guardian, stated in the claim that the child suf fered injuries because of alleged negligence by the deceased, when an automobile in which the minor was riding collided with a truck "then owned and operated by the deceased Gye Bennett." The accident was reported to ; have occurred near Gazley road, bet"'een Canyonville and Myrtle Creek. Organization Of State Defense Units Is Urged PORTLAND, UP) S t a t e Civil Defense director Louis E. Starr told city and county offi cials here to start organizing their units of the State Defense ad minisration. Starr said Oregon was ahead of other states in planning but lacks organization. He said "the responsibility of civil defense in its organized forms rests on the community." , He outlined the departments authorized by the 1949 iedislature under the program. Starr said "we must considen the possibility that we may receive an atom bomb on Portland."., ..- Negro Quartette Heard At Senior High School On Dec. 20 the Senior high school was privileged to hear the Coleman brothers Negro quar tette sing. The assembly was opened by the flag salute, and students re mained standing while the quar tette sang the "Lord's Prayer.'' They sang several spirituals and some other songs, including "The Martins and the Coys," "There's a-Tree in the Meadow," "Old Man River," "Juanita," and while one played the accom paniment ihe others acted the parts of "Tea for Two." They closed with "Silent Night." This was reported as one of the most enjoyable assemblies this year.
