Christmas Party
Saved Writer
From Plane Crash
Wllford Brown Jr., native of
Camas Valley, where he is now
visiting his mother and daugh
ter, credits a Christmas party
with the fact that he Is still
alive.
Brown, a script writer for the
Alka Seltzer Newspaper of the
.Air, had made plane reserva
tions for a pre-Christmas trip
home. But the Newspaper of the
Air personnel decided on a
Christmas party and Brown can
celled his reservations.
The plane crashed near Valle
jo, Dec. 7, killing all on board.
KRNR Hsterners doubtless will
be Interested in a story Brown
tells of that party, as it Involves
two of their favorite newscasters.
Frank Hemingway, a guest at
the party, prepared a transcrip
tion directed to Glenn Hardy. It
purported to be the voice of Win
ston Churchill, ascribing to Alka
Seltzer, the halting of a planned
invasion of the British Isles.
The story was that British
spies infiltrated German uniform
factories and sewed Alka Seltzer

Federal Loans To
Develop Alaska
WASHINGTON, m Con
gress early next year may he
asked to set up an Alaska devel
opment administration.
The purpose would be to make
loans to private interests for
starting new businesses and in
dustries inthe territory.
The Interior department Is
drifting a bill to that end. Regin
ald C. Price, one of the depart
ment officials working on it, told
a reporter:
"The primary purpose is to
overcome the most important
single remaining obstacle to the
development of Alaska the lack
of venture capital.
"What little money there is
available for Alaskan projects is
at interest rates too high to serve
the purpose. Eight percent is the
going rate."
The proposed measure would
reproach the Alaska Development
Corporation bill advanced last
September by William E. Warne,
assistant secretary of the inter
ior. Price, special assistant to
Warne, said that bill is dead.
It would have set up an agencv
to enable the Federal govern
ment to establich its own indus
tries and businesses in Alsaka at
perhaps a cost of $1,000,000,000
and later, if feasible, sell or lease
them to private interests.
Price said the forthcoming pro
posal involves a much smaller
figure.
The loan program would tie In
with Alaska1 Droiect settlement
legislation now before the house
public lands committee. This bill
would authorize the Reconstruc
tion Finance Corp. to spend up to
$7;500,000 in connection with the
quick installation of settlement
projects in Alaska.

War, Savant Says
WASHINGTON UP) Dr. Har
old C. Urey, who helped develop
the atomic bomb, declares that
the only real protection against
It is a "universal government"
of the world.
He urged the western democ
racies to take steps In that di
rection by:
1. Forming a limited political
union; 2. inviting other democ
racies to participate; and 3. Ul
timately including the rest of the
world after "undermining the
dictatorship which controls east
ern Europe and much of Asia."
"Eventually," Urey told a
meeting of the Atlantic Union
committee, "there is no satisfac
tory solution to modern military
problems except a universal gov
ernment." He suggested that the Initial
move should be taken by the na
tions which signed the Atlantic
pact. A western political union,
he said, would strengthen the de
mocracies and spread "immense
dissatisfaction In Soviet-dominated
areas." He added:
"Undermining the dictatorship
which controls eastern Europe
and much of Asia is necessary
before we can expect to work
with the Important peoples now
enslaved there."
Urey is one of the directors
of the Atlantic Union committee.
This private organization is back
ing a move in Congress to have
President Truman call a confer
ence of the seven nations which
sponsored the Atlantic pact, for
consideration of a federal union.
The resolution was introduced
on Capitol hill by 20 senators
ana live Mouse members. Com
mittee hearings on it are exnect-
ed next year.
The atomic scientist, a profes
sor at the University of Chicago,
said world government Is the

"The real Droblem before us
Is not the atomic bomb and nev.

kinds have become so effective
that the victors and the van
quished are almost equally de
stroyed." Non-Registration Draws

seemed to have in mind the pos

soon after the first of the year.
The general expectation is that
Attlee will make no election an
nouncement until around Feb. 1
at the earliest. He can and may
delay It several months longer.
Churchill, accompanied Ly his
wife, will travel outward aboard
the Union Castle liner Durban
