He was scheduled to meet with President Aleman today, talk again with Gen Harry H. John son, head of the U. S. section helping Mexico fight the cattle disease, and visit the Poza Rica oil fields. Sen. Morse noted yesterday that Mexico has asked a $400,000,- 000 loan from the United States to develop oil lands. He praised what he saw of Mexican govern ment oil developments under the Latin American nation's national monopoly Pemex bureau. This touowed visits to on neias ana refineries. The U. S. senator said yester day he believes the Americas are a bulwark against Red dominat ed Asia. He said: "I think we must recognize that Canada, the United States, Mexico and the Latin American countries to the south constitute a strong chain in defense of free dom against the threat of totali tarianism as we see it rearing its head in Asia." "I believe that the future se curity of the United States de pends on cooperation with these countries in a program of mutual am ana understanding. Rape Slayer Weeps After His Conviction ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Dec. 16 UP) Harvey L. Carignan, 22, sobbed in his cell last night, guards said, after he was con victed of what the prosecution termed "the most brutal crime ever committed in this court district." A federal court jury found the fort Richardson soldier guilty of the rape slaying of Mrs. Laura Showalter last July 31. The middle-aged victim was the mother of Mrs. Willard Boatwright of Port Orchard, Wash. Although he wept later, Carig nan showed no emotion when the verdict was read, despite the jury's stipulation that he should die by hanging. Under Alaska law, at least five days must elapse before sentenc ing. The soldier, who spent much of his youth in a North Dakota reform school, also awaits sen tencing on a previous conviction of assault with intent to rape an other Anchorage woman. The Deveraux sisters, Evelyn and Betty, presented two Jazz and boogie-woogie numbers ad vertising the Elks' Minstrel show. The . advanced reed instrument class, composed of eighth and ninth graders, played several numbers before the assembled Rotarlans. The group, 18 eighth graders and four ninth graders, was directed by Charles Rlcketts. Rlcketts will direct the "Messi ah" concert next Tuesday eve ning at the junior high school. Capt. Claude Bowdcn announc ed that the Salvation Army is to have a Christmas party for chll- Salvation Army Will Sponsor Kiddies' Party . The Salvation Army is sponsor ing a children's Christmas party at its new building at 1005 Win chester street, announced Capt. Claude Bowden. The party will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21. DRIVERS WARNED BEND, Dec. 16 UP) Fire Chief Le Roy Fox threatened yes terday to arrest drivers of cars or trucks from which gasoline is leading.
