Protestant Churches Plan Union To Help Small Units With Inadequate Finances GREENWICH, Conn., Dec. 15. (Establishment of a United Protestant church partly to save small Independent congregations with inadequate finances and facilities Is sought at a conference here. Representatives of more than 19,000,000 churchgoers aro attend ing the three-day conference. The main business will be to establish a permanet committee "to explore several proposals which will be submitted to imerested denominations for a United Church of Christ in America." This goal was explained by Dr. Mark A. Dawber, co-executive secretary of the Home Missions council. This agency, which re presents 25 religious bodies, ar ranged the conference. Dr. Truman B. Douglass, ex ecutive vice-president of the Board of Home Missions, Con gregational Christian church, said dcnund for the meeting had been spur.-ed by deficiencies in church facilities for many of the nation's 47,000,000 protestants. The conference Is sponsored by seven denominations repre senting 15,140,000 members. Sev en other denominations, with 4, 257,000 members, sent observers. Also attending are consultants from four interdenominational councils. Presiding over the sessions is Dr. Douglas Horton, secretary of the general council of the Con gregational Christian churches. Defects Pointed Out Here are some of the things Dr. Douglas mentioned In con nection with the conference's aim: Many new communities don't have a church or Sunday school. Older communities, with shrinking populations, should have a consolidated church in stead of trying futilely to support St. Onge and Mrs. Paul R. Shank lin, hostesses. Those attending are asked to bring gifts for chil dren to exchange and later to be given to child welfare. several. A congregation In Eg gertsville, N.Y., uses a chicken coop. One in Glenview, 111., uses a bowling alley. On Long Island, New York, a Manhasset congre gation uses a roadside restaurant and a south Hempstead congre gation, a garage. Dr. Douglass said a stronger attack could be made on such problems as housing, racial strife and Juvenile delinquency through a united church. The seven denominations spon soring the conference are: Meth odist church, Disciples of Christ, church, Presbyterian church in (he U. S. A., Congregational Christian churches, Moravian church in America (Northern Province) and African Methodist Episcopal Zion. These churches already accept each other's ministries and sac raments. Observers are being sent by these denominations: Protestant Episcopal church, Church of the Brethren, Five Years Meeting of Friends In America (Quakers), Augustana Lutheran, Evangelical United Brethren, Presbyterian church in the U. S. (South), and Churches of God In North Amer ica. Consultants are being sent by the Federal Council of the Chur ches of Christ in America, Na tional Council of Community Churches, International Council of Religious Education, and the Home Missions council. Penny Supper The Tenmile j Ladies club will sponsor a penny ; supper Saturday night at the clubhouse. The supper will be served at 6:30 o'clock.
