It may be necessary to sharply curtail other general assistance in Douglas county due to budget limitations, Lois Ba ker, administrator, announced. No medical bills can be' oaid by the welfare commission that have not had prior authorization from the commission. Total obligations incurred by the Douglas County Public Wel fare commission for the month of October 1949 were in the araount of $47,968.92. Expenditures for the month of November were $50,101.00. It is anticipated that expenditures will be somewhat over that figure for December and January. Increases are due to enlarged standards for Social Security grants and to the cur rent unemployment situation. In view of mounting costs, it was voted at the recent Douglas County Public Welfare commis sion meeting to assist single able bodied transients for one night only and single able bodied local men not to exceed three' days. Meeting recently ,vlth the local Welfare Commission were George Foster, manager of the Oregon State Employment serv ice; Douglas Simms, executive director, American Red Cross; Mrs. Lois Kent, board member of the American Red Cross; Er win Short, service officer for Sol diers and Sailors Indigent fund, and Captain Claude Bowden, Sal vation Army.
