BERLIN (Pt East German
communists have stepped up
their propaganda campaign to
get the Western powers out of

Franz Dahlem, eastern sector

members at a party congress
that the anti-communist situation
in West Berlin is "unbearable."
'This bridgehead of Western
powers must be rolled up from
within," he said in a speech.
"This position must be torn out
of the hands of Germany's ene

party now faces and for which it
must concentrate all its forces."
Dahlem was reported in some
quarters to have brought his or

The keynote of the campaign
was emphasized in all Soviet sec

Dahlem proposed a number of

Berlin by overwhelming major
ities. Dahlem pointed out that a good
starting point for agitation could
be found in the 80,000 Russian
sector Germans who work in the
Western sector, and .among the
120,000 west Berliners who work
in the Soviet sector.
Bis speech boiled the problem
down to one between the Russian

and American dollars.
"American capital," he said,
"has won the ideological victory
over the working classes In west
Berlin." To overcome this he said
the party must organize "an all

Big, burly Henry Schrimpf said
yetserday he ha(fhad many hot
words with Harry Bridges but he
denied having a "great hatred"
for him.
Schrimpf, a native of Australia
but now a United States citizen
and a longshore walking boss,
was under cross examination at
Bridges' perjury and conspiracy
trial.
"As long ago as 1937 did you
not harbor a great hatred against
Harry Bridges?" asked James
Maclnnis of defense counsel.
"I never expressed myself that
way," Schrimpf retorted. "I
fought him on many occasions on
policy. Sometimes we came to
very bitter words."
Bridges, president' of the Inter
national Longshoremen's and
Warehousemen's union, and two

Bridges lied, and the others abet
ted the deceit; when he said at
his 1945 naturalization hearing
that he never had been a member
of the communist party.
Schrimpf has testiiiea tnat
Bridges took an active part in
communist party councils during
the 1934 wateriront strike nere.
Maclnnis .pursued his examina
tion of Schrimpf's feelings to
ward the defendants
"Did you not assault Henry
Schmidt on one occasion with
your fists?" he asked.
"I protected myself from
Schmidt from an insult,"
Schrimpf said.
Maclnnis ash-ea ir scnrimpi
hadn't at least six times within
the past month at a waterfront
bar loudly proclaimed that he
would "do anything to get
Bridges and Schmidt?"
That is a definite lie!"
Schrimpf shouted angrily.
Maclnnis asked the witness
about his having been picked up
and questioned by Immigration
officials during the 1937 conven
tion of the maritime federation
of the Pacific coast in Portland.
"All the time you were at that
convention protesting an Intru
sion against your private rights
you were already dealing with R.
P. Bonham, immigration chief
there, and passing on information
you hoped would destroy Harry
Bridges, weren't you?" he asked.
"No. I passed on no Informa
tion." Schrimpf denied that Bonham
had asked him whether he was a
communist.
