Oregon's October
Traffic Deaths
Show Increase
Despite nearly 1,000 fewer ac
cidents and 250 fewer personal
injuries, Oregon's traffic deaths
in October were higher than in
the same month- last year, the
state traffic safety division re
pul is.
The final toll was set at 38,
compared wlh 35 a year ago. An
additional 963 persons were in
jured in the 4,708 accidents re
ported. All but five of the deaths oc
curred in rural areas, an unusual
ly high proportion, the division
said. A breakdown of the fatal
ities by accident types shows col
lision between vehicles, 15; non
collision accidents in which a ve
hicle overturned or ran off. the
roadway, 13; pedestrian mis
haps, 6; collision with a railroad
train, 2; and collision with a fix
ed object, 1.
Loss of control due to exces
sive speed was directly respons
ible for at least nine of the
deaths, and driving too fast for
road conditions figured in 13
more, according to the safety di
vision. Intoxicated drivers were
responsible for six of the fatali
ties. One driver fell asleep at the
wheel and another drove off the
road when he became ill. Mis
cellaneous violations by drivers
or pedestrians were responsible
for most of the other deaths, the
report shows.
With the possible exception of
the one in which the driver be
came ill, none of the accidents
could be classified as unavoid
able, the division declared.

Atomic Boon To
Mankind Told
By Lilienthal
WASHINGTON, m Da
vid E. Lilienthal says that atom
ic developments of the next ten
years can mean as much as a
century of the past in improving
healtn, long me and food pro-
auction,
Lilienthal, who is retiring as
chairman of the Atomic Energy
commission, gave his views in
an interview copyrighted by U.
S. News and World Report, week
ly news magazine. He said:
"I would say within a decade,
if we have made headway on our
chief problem the problem o f
peace we can look back on this
decade as having a profound ef
fect on health and the lengthen
ing of life.
"I should think that such a de
cade could mean at least as
much as a century .of some ear
lier period in the development
of longevity and health, and in
improvement of food production.
"These atomic . materials
these radioactive tracers or. iso
topes are so cheap and so inex
pensive and so easy to have and
can now be made in such quan
tities that it is not unreasonable
to expect in a short time they
will even be part of the training
of high school students.'
Lilienthal also estimated that
practical power plants operating
on atomic energy can be operat
ing in 10 years 'but at high cost.
He said "in 23 years we will
have' some very respectable
plants, in a cost sense."
