Kisenhower's latest thumbs-down on a presidential candidacy has found about a many believers as cynic in Washington. ,, ... ', ; ;.,... Eisenhower told reporters at Cincinnati that he li devoting all of his time to his Job a; president of Columbia university and has no intention of seeking political office. Politicians willing to take the general at his word argued that Eisenhower seems to be pursu ing the course least likely to win him a nomination by repeating this statement. Cynics contended that the gen eral's words left him open to a possible draft by the Republican National convention in 1952. They said such a draft movement might grow by leaps and bounds, for instance, if GOP candidates don't fare so well in the 1950 Congressional faces. Byrnes' Attitude Analyzed ' While this speculation occupied the Republican camp, Democrats wondered whether James F. Byrnes might be laying the ground work for. an anti-Tr Jinan organization with his attacks on the President's "Fair Deal."' An a former Secretary of State in the Truman Cabinet and a for mer Supreme court justice, Byrnes' attacks on what he calls the "socialistic programs" of the president are regarded here as bearing more weight than the same words uttered by Republi cans. . - Byrnes, whose break with Mr.' Truman Has never been publicly explained, has hinted that he might be a candidate for gover nor of South Carolina. However, some of his friends are speculating that Byrnes might get out of the field at the last moment to leave the way open for his long-time friend and Gifts of Myrtlewood ''-.' at Ordinary Gift Prices! Thurmend Still in Field Byrnes' speech to the southern governors' conference was cred ited in part for the adoption by that group of a resolution oppos ing government regulation 01 in dividuals and .calling for restora tion of state sovereignty. The governors also elected Gov. J. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, who headed the states hrights ticket In last years presi dental election, as me new nead of their group. Thurmond is looked upon as a likely candidate against Senator Olin D. Johnston (D SC), seeking re-election next year. Thurmond could be expected to maKe a states rignts campaign against Johnston, who snubbed tne Democratic . jenerson-jacK- son banquet here last year but helped raise money for the Tru man campaign and hurried to Washington to congratulate Pres ident Truman after the letter's election.
