A few Douglas county residents may remember the bent,' cheer ful little old lady who lived for several years with the Bert Graves family on a farm northeast of Drain. She was Grandma Downs. Herself the youngest of nine 1 : children, she was born in Ohio November 7, 1847, and named Margaret Louisa Van Dorn. Hers was a nloneerlng family, de scended from New York and New Jersey colonists of the late 17th century. Her father, Ellsha Van Dorn, nomesteaoea near Mans field, Ohio, in the area of our Dresent-day author Louis Brom- field's "Malabar Farm." In 1856, the family moved to Iowa, where they homesteaded near West Union. There Louisa Van Dorn met and married John Merrlt Downs in 1866, when she was nineteen years old. It was in 1873 that John and Louisa Downs came to Oregon. Covered-wagon days were past and the railroads had spread their network from ocean to ocean. While John Downs drove his herd of cattle and wagon load of household goods across the mountains, Louisa Downs took the three children on the train to San Francisco. From there, they proceeded by boat to Portland, thence by stagecoach to eastern Oregon, where they settled in the Blue Mountain country southeast of Pendleton. After her husband's death in 1909, Grandma Downs lived with her children's families near Med ford, Portland and Mllton-Free water. It was at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Ida Stewart, near Milton, that Grandma Downs en Joyed her last years. A great-great-grandmother since 1942, Grandma Downs was able until the last to read her beloved Bible with the aid only of a reading glass. Now the busy hands that "pieced" many a patchwork quilt are stilled. Grandma Downs Is dead.
