More than 1100 Oregon school buses have been checked by state department personnel under the new school bus inspection pro gram set In motion by the last state legislature, Secretary of State. Earl T. Newbry reported today. Initial Inspection of the state'i estimated total of 1200 buses is expected to be completed by De cember 30, after which a re check of older vehicles will begin. The law directed the secretary of state to adopt and enforce me chanical and equipment specifica tions in line with those recom mended nationally. Standards were published and distributed last July and inspections began shortly before the opening of the current school year. Newbry said buses placed In service for the first time within ai school district are required to meet the new standards, while older units continuing in service within a district are inspected for general operational safety. - Installation of stop signal arms, bearing the word "stop" in white reflectorized letters on a red background, will soon . be com pleted on all buses, the secretary reported. The signal arm is dis- filayed while children are cress ng the roadway as a reminder to motorists who are stopped for the bus that they must not proceed until the way is clear. Jayect Forum To Deal ' With Hoover Report The Hoover commission report will be explained by a panel of Roseburg Junior Chamber of Commerce members tonight at 7:30, over station KRNR, accord ing to Warren Ward, Jaycee for um broadcast chairman. Ward said that explanation of tne Hoover commission was tak en on as a national project by the United States Junior Cham ber of Commerce, which ei-oud endorses the commission report. The, concert is cpen to asso ciation members and visiting members from other cities. -,'' Jaycees Nominate Officers, Hear Talk By Al Knauss On Community Hospital Plans Nomination , of officers for the coming year and a talk, by Al Knauss, Community hospital manager, highlighted a meeting of the Roseburg Junior Chamber of Commerce last night at the Umpqua hotel. " '. ' '. Knauss, who came here from Brooklyn recently explained what the new community hospital will consist of in regards, to equipment and other ' facilities. . The hospital will be open to all persons and to all doctors, and facilities will incude a path ological service, pharmacy, x ray room, a general surgery unit and a special surgery reserved for dental operations and ear, nose and throat surgery, Knauss said. In addition, a special five-bed children's ward, decorated to please the child, will be included. This will be the only ward unit in the hospital, Knauss said. All other rooms will be private or semi-private, i.e., not more than two beds. Floor space will equal one acre, or 23,000 square feet, ac cording to the hospital manager. He indicated that in his capacity as manager, he would be the "go between" between the hospital board, made up of local citizens, ana tne people, rne directors, win run the hospital', Knauss said, subject to suggestions from hos pital donors. The government helps keep the hospital op?n to new ideas,, the speaker said, adding that more progress has been made in hos pitals in the last 25 years than in the previous 100 years, due to government help. He said several other groups help maintain standards for hos pitals throughout the nation, as a protection to the patient. Some of these groups include the Am erican Hospital association and the American College of Hospital Administrators.
