The Newi-Review, Roseburg, Ore. Sat., Nov. 19, 1949 Philetarian Lodge 1 3W .-. Philetarian lodge No. 8, I.O.O.F. sponsored a dinner et the I.O.O.F. hall Thursday evening. The evening honored Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Dent who have been members of the I.O.O.F. and Rebekah lodges lor the past 23 years. The occasion also celebrated the completion ot redecoratlon of the lodge rooms. Above are a group ol those who participated in the evening's program. Twenty three years of membership In the I.O.O.F. lodge and the Rebekah lodges was rewarded Thursday night when lodge members honored Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Dent at a dinner. Both were presented flowers by Oliver Plummer. I.O.O.F. DINNER HONORS MEMBERS FOR LONQ SERVICE Phlleterlan Lodge, No. 8, I.O. O.F. honored Robekahs Theta Rho girls and their families at a dinner at the I.O.O.F. hall Thurs day evening with over 100 In at tendance. The dinner gave spe cial honor to Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Dent, who have been members of the lodges for the past 23 years. Fall flowers and candles dec orated the dining tables and la ter the group adjourned to the social room where a program was announced by Ralph Rus sell. Jackson street, Monday, November 14. Mothers of the pupils enjoyed a program which consisted of selections featuring composers of the romantic era. The program lnclud ed several musical lumbers by Charles Klckelts' reed lnstru ment class at Junior high school, Kenneth Gilkeson showed a mo tion picture, "From the Egg to the Frying Pan, scenic views and fishing scenes in Douglas coun ty. A large committee of I.O.O.F. members made arrangements for the evening dinner and pro gram. and also In the serving of re freshments at the close of the program. Jackson Newly - Decorated Lodge Rooms "t Society and QluAi By LOTUS KNICHT PORTER and BETTY ALLEN Mrs. Thel Wilson Is Guest Speaker At Woman's Club Mrs. Thel Wilson, Myrtle Creek, who is known from coast to coast for her excellent pottery and owner of a ceramics and sculpture studio, was guest speaker at the Roseburg Wom an's club meeting at the Metho dist church Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Leland Van Allen very gra ciously introduced Mrs. Wilson, who gave an intensely interesting talk on "The Art of Pottery." Mrs. Wilson studied at Mills college in San Francisco and in the School of Arts and Crafts at Berkeley, as well as studying de sign and oil painting, ceramics and sculpture In New York. Mrs. Wilson and her husband make their pottery from clay found right on their own farm property at Myrtle Creek. In 1948 Mrs. Wilson won first prize at the Ore gon State fair pottery exhibit with a bowl made of her own backyard clay. Recently she cre ated pottery for an exhibit by the Philadelphia Art Alliance, In which she was invited to partici pate and for the ceramics na tional exhibition. From this lat ter exhibit, individual pieces are selected to form a traveling show of pottery to be exhibited In mu seums through the United States. In 1948, a vase of Mrs. Wilson's was chosen for this traveling ex hibit. Mrs. J. M. Boyles, president, conducted the meeting with Mrs. Lucien Cohb, chaplain, giving the invocation. Mrs. Clyde Carstens accompanied the group singing. Miss Jennie Jorey gave the sec retary's report and Mrs. Lester Nielsen gave the treasurer's re port In the absence of Mrs. Ver non Keel. Mrs. Lucien Cobb was elected first vice-president In the place of Mrs. James P. Joyce, who re signed. A report from the Hobby Art show chairman, Mrs. Leland Van Allen, was given. The show will be an event of Nov. 29 30. Members are asked to bring gifts for patients of the state hos pital at the next meeting, Decem ber 6. The meeting will be held at one-thirty o'clock at the Meth odist church. JAPAN IS TOPIC OF GUILD REPORT AT 8HERK HOME Mrs. Marion Johnson talked on "Japan Begins Again," a book on the Island country, at the Forsythe Guild meeting of the First Presbyterian church at the home of Miss Elnor Sherk. The business meeting was called to order by the President, Mrs. Flo rence Lozler. Devotions were In charge of Mrs. Orlena Slattcry and Miss Luella Whitehead. Miss Sherk and Mrs. Alta Simonson served refreshments to Mrs. W. M. CHAIRMAN OF CLUB Mrs. Viola Spencer was elect ed chairman of the Rlversdale Home Economics club for the coming year at a meeting held recently at the home of Mrs. Sig Madsen in Garden Valley. Mrs. Cleo Tipton will be vice chairman; Mrs. Eldon Ogle, se cretary and Mrs. Charles Stark, treasurer. The recent dinner and bazaar held at the grange hall was discussed. A Thanksgiving dinner will be held at the hall Thursday, Nov. 24. The grange will furnish turkey and members are asked to bring potluck and their table service. A cooked food sale and fancy work display will be held Satur day, Dec. 3 at the E. G. High Insurance office. The next meet ing will be held at the home of Mm. Parrott, first president of the Roseburg Busi ness and Professional Woman's club, was honored at the 25th an niversary of the club Monday evening at the Episcopal parish hall. Also present for the meeting were five members who have held continuous membership in the club since the signing of the charter in 1924. They were Stella Spencer, Laura lies, Edyth Gil mour, Emily Judd and Florence Snedaker. Mrs. Spencer read a history of the club's first year with Miss Parrott giving a short response. Mrs. Spencer then introduced 11 past presidents of the organiza tion. These were Miss Parrott, Kath erine Kenny, Verna Carothers, Stella Spencer, Elizabeth Hein line, Vera Fredrickson, Minnie Clark, Ina Farnsworth, Alvia Wetherell, Edna Helgeson and Jean Whittenburg. During the business session an nouncement was made concern ing the Thanksgiving dance which will be sponsored by the club for the 20th year. It was announced that Celia Day, regis trar at the Veterans hospital, has been nominated by the Roseburg B. P. W. C. for Queen of America. Miss Parrott and Vivian Logs don presided at the service table which was centered with a large birthday cake with 25 lighted candles. Hostesses for the evening were Golda Nickell, Stella Spencer, Iris Spring, Emily Judd and Laura lies. A potluck dinner will feature the November 28th meeting with Cella Day as chairman of the evening's program on "Interna tional Relations."
