Tuei., Nov. 15, 1M9MQfre Dame Still Tops Grid Poll; Army Skids To 4 Baffle Over "Two-Platoon" Foofball Due For Resumption At Coaches Assn. Meeting By WILL GRIMSLEY ! NEW YORK, Nov. 15. (IP) Get set for a knock-down drag-out rules battle this winter over "two-platoon" football. The subject Is red hot again. The small guys, snorting fire and brimstone, are agin' it. The big guys, with their multiple-unit squads and lush athletic coffers, are all for It. The matter will come to a head at the meeting of the college rules committee here in Janur ary. Chief spokesman for the op ponents of the free substitution rule is Harvey Harman of Rut gers, former president of the Football Coaches association. "I am convinced we can change the rules and klli the two platoon system," Harman says. "I know 90 per cent of the coaches are against the present rule." The liberalized substitution rule permits teams to shove players In and out of games in 11-man units. This has brought tha age of specialization, with seperate offensive and defensive elevens. Harman and his crowd want the standards revised so that a coach can substitute only two or three men at a time. The pro-platoon boys , - - and you'd have to list Earl Blaik of Army and Left James of Cornell as the main champions - - con tend that free substitution Is an other step in the progress of the sport. "The era of specialization Is here and here to stay," contend the proplatooners. "We shouldn't hamper the game just to equa lize plnylng strength." Lou Little of Columbia, chair man of the coaches rules com mittee, urges the boys not to be hasty In their judgement. "This much I know," he said, "you can't equalize the playing strengths of teams by' legisla tion." If form prevails Saturday and Michigan defeats Ohio State while Minnesota is beating Wis consin, count on Minnesota go ing to the Rose Bowl , . BOSTON, -Nov. 15 OP) Joe Louis left Boston "feelln' good" and with a sincere verbal pat on the back for Johnny Shkor, the Boston and Baltimore heavy weight with whom he went ten exhibition rounds. Louis, who had a majority of the Boston garden fans root ing for him last night, drew the plaudits of reporters for his de cency. As he reclined on a rubbing table wrapped in towels the re tired heavyweight king respond ed to a question. "Sure I'd have knocked him out if I could've in one punch. But I didn't want to get him ataggerin' around'n then do It. This was an exhibition." . There wasn't much doubt that Louis, who began a string of ten 10-round exhibitions here, could have "gone after" Shkor and cut him up considerably, eventually knocking out his opponent. For the Brown Bomber still has his punch, even though his lack of timing from inactivity was obvious. Nevertheless, he dropped Shkor three times for nine counts, once In the second and twice In the third.
