Benefit Dinner
Dated At Church
"All you can eat," Is the prom
ise of Roseburg Junior Woman's
club chairman Lorraine Crocker,
to those who attend a benefit
spaghetti dinner tonight Irom 6-9
p.m. at the First Christian
church. -
Those planning to attend the
Grants Pass-Roseburg football
game are Invited to come early,
Mrs. Crocker said.
A full course dinner accom
panying the spaghetti fare will
cost adults $1 and children 50
cents.
Proceeds from the dinner will
benefit boys at the state indus
trial school at Woodburn and the
Roseburg community hospital.
A turkey, donated by Lawson's
Jewelers, will be given away as
a special prize. The spaghetti is
being donated by a nationally fa
mous paste products firm.
Tickets to the benefit dinner
may be purchased either at Law
son's or members of the Junior
Woman's club.
Birth Of Reformation
Observed By Lutherans
St. John's Lutheran church of
Sutherlin held a special Refor
mation day service Sunday morn
ing at its place of worship, the
Sutherlin Scout hall. Rev. Rich
ard E. Graef spoke on the topic,
"Martin Luther and the Modern
World." Special music was pro
vided by Mary Lynn Dies. Mem
bers of the church celebrated the
Lord's supper.
This service commemorated
the Protestant reformation,
which started Oct. 31, 1517.
Pastor Graef directed the
thought of the congregation to
the basic tenets of the Protestant
reformation and to examine their
usefulness as a philosophy of life
in the modern world.

Jack Tatum, 28, wavy-haired des
perado who dodged a storm of
bullets and broke jail at Phoenix,
Ariz., faces a trip back to the
same barred lodgings.-
Unarmed and broke, he sur
rendered meekly late Tuesday to
BI men who spotted him on a
little-traveled downtown street
Tatum and four other prisoners
started the break in the Mari
copa County jail early the morn
ing of Oct. 22. Only Tatum fi
nished it.
Two of his buddies, Edward
Corcoran, 3, and Charles Ed
ward NcEwen, 32, died on a stair
way. They were shot by a crip
pled watchman, Tom Stowe. The
other two, Dinzel McDonald and
John Bridges, staggered out of
a cloud of tear gas with their
hands up.
Tatum made it to the ground
floor and slid out a window.
Proposed Revision Of
Mining Laws To Be Eyed
PORTLAND, Nov. 4. (JP) A
Pacific northwest regional com
mittee will be appointed to make
further studies of proposed revis
ion of United States mining laws,
Daniel L. Goldy says.
Goldy, regional bureau of land
management administrator, said
appointment of the committee
waj proposed at the regional con
ference on revision of the laws
at Spokane Oct. 17-18.
Committee members will be
named after consultation with
mining, lumber, livestock, recrea
tion and wildlife groups, he Baid.
They will continue discussions,
started at Spokane, of land use
and conservation problems aris
ing from present laws governing
.the location and patenting of min
ing claims on public lands.
Goldy said basic mining laws
of this country have not been
changed since 1872.

writer-producer of the series, is host.
Dr. V. K. Wellington Koo, China's ambassador to the
U. 3., and head of his country's delegation to the United
Nations, will do the "Meet the Press" guest for this week's
broadcast. Dr Koo will be Interviewed by Phelps Adams,
Washington Bureau chief of the N. Y. Sun; Ernest K.

EUGENE, Nov. 4 (IP) 111
health has forced the resignation
from office of Mayor Warren A.
Edwards of Cottage Grove, it
was reported here. The city coun
cil next Monday night will fill
the vacancy from one of Its own
number, and at the same time
will appoint a new councilman
to fill that vacancy.
A permanent successor to May
or Edwards, age 51, will be elect
ed in the May, 1950, primaries.
He has been In ill health for
some time.
