Cordon On Way Home For Deserved Rest WASHINGTON, Oct. 31 UP) After devoting most of his time since last January to appropria tion bills, Senator Cordon (R Ore) looks forward to hunting geese and fishing for salmon in his home state. A member of seven Senate Ap propriations subcommittees, Cor don says he worked on more money bills than any other mem ber of the Senate. And he prides himself that he attended every session of the Senate this year. He is a member of the Appro priations subcommittees on agri culture, Armed Services, defici encies, Army Clvli functions, in dependent offices, Interior de partment and Treasury-Postof-flee. He is the ranking Republi can on the latter group. Day in and day out during most of the session he sat with subcommittees hearing requests for funds. He left today for his home at Roseburg. Later he will go to the Klamath Falls area to hunt geese. "But," he said, "I never did like to eat geese." He plans to fish for salmon and will visit Depoe Bay and Newport. Congress appropriated funds for constructing a refuge harbor at Depoe Bay at Cordon's insistence. He succeeded in get ting the money included in the Army Civil functions bill. Cordon, who loves to hunt and fish, got out a few weekends dur ing the recent session. But he doesn't care much for the trout fishing hereabouts. And when lie went hunting in Virginia, "it al ways was the wrong day." In the early part of December the Senator may go to Puerto Rico and the Virgin islands for the Senate Interior committee. Salem Police Say Negroes Are Welcome In City SALEM UP) The case of a Negro, who charged he was or dered out of town by a Salem po liceman, has been settled, as far as the police department was con- oernea. Police officials promised at a hearing yesterday that Negroes could come here whenever they wished. Assistant Police Chief E. C. Charlton said the police de partment "has no feeling of race prejudice." Alderman farms, which brought the complaint on behalf of their Negro employes, said they were satisfied that the case should be closed. . The principals in the contro versy disagreed about what actu ally happened. Ward Jackson Sr.. 51-year-old Portland Negro, said in a sworn affidavit that he was awaiting his farm wages when a patrolman approached. "He ordered us to move out to ward the curb," Jackson said in the statement filed with the state fair employment practices advisory commission. "We all started to move; then the officer beckoned to me. "He said, 'what's vour business here?' I explained. He said 'when you get your check vou be God damn sure you catch the first God damn bus out of here because I don't want you hanging around'." A Salem policeman who was on duty at the point in question denied that. Officer Arch Wilson said he merely asked a group of people "not to congregate so as to block traffic."
