Truman's Tax Increase Talk Meant Realignment Of Present Structure, Senator Magnuson's Explanation ' WASHINGTON, Oct. 28.-4P) Senator Magnuson (D-Wash) said Thursday that when President Trurnan last week talked about a tax Increase he referred to realignment of the tax struc ture and not to a general tax Increase. "He was not speaking about an Increase In the Individual Income tax and particularly not about the lower Income brackets," Mag nuson told a reporter. "He was referring to a read justment of taxes, particularly corporate taxes. We rcpealed.the surplus tax three years ago and Mr. Truman has suggested that it be re-enacted. "The public, generally speak ing, is not going to have ar.y tax increase next year. It may mean that corporate dividends may have to be lowered." Magnuson, a close friend of Mr. Truman, said that even cor porate taxes may not have to be increased. . "This is because about $16,000, 000,000 of the government ex penses are for defenses, $5,000, 000,000 for the Marshall plan and roughly $3,000,000,000 for arms aid to Atlantic pact countries-and economies and decreases in those Items may enable the govern ment to balance the budget with out a tax increase. Last Thursday Mr. Truman told a news conference he would ask- Congreis for higher taxes next year. He said he would re commend ways to keep the gov ernment from having a deficit and if there is any other way to do it than by increasing taxes he IttOO Miule You Want. 10:301 Lov A Mystery. Magnuson, speaking of possi ble economies, said he had been informed unification of the medi cal services of the armed forces alone would save several hun dred .million dollars a- year. Similar economies would- show up through the entire defense budget next year, he said. "And we may not need much money for the Marshall plan or for the arms aid program next year," he added. "That would aid in balancing the budget." Magnuson said adoption of the Hoover commission recommend ations for governmental reorgan ization would save money. PORTER SCARPELU'S SPAGHETTI DINNER. All other institution doctors can be unlicensed, Neuner said. Governor McKay said he asked for the opinion because "the State Medical association has been giving rne a bad tinge with their protests against the state hiring unlicensed doctors," McKay said the state has a hard time getting licensed physi cians to work at the hospitals because the pay Isn't large enough. So, he . said, the state has hired unlicensed physicians, Including some European doctors who were forced to come . to America by the war.
