Nourse, chairman of the President's Economic Ad visory council, has spoken his mind in a fashion that ought to command the attention of all Americans. While his remarks are being interpreted as an attack upon the Truman administration, Nourse made plain he did not intend them as such. He wished to spare no one neither government nor ! business, labor or farmers. I He hopped on government for I not putting its financial house in order, for "slipping back into de- ! ficlts as a way of life" even while j times are still good. He caution ed against "monetary and fiscal tricks" which he termed a "slip pery road to misery." Nourse criticized industrial management for not trying harder to cut prices in the na- ; tional interest. ; i Farm, labor and other groups came In lor censure lor squeez ing the U. S. economy in their own special interests. He told them all that they were selfishly demanding too much. Then he added: "If we are to maintain the march of economic progress, we must, individually and as groups, in private business and in poli tics, display industry, prudencs and self-discipline and must re- manTO thnf w rnn't opt- mnm I nut nf thp prnnnmin Kvstpm than we put in." Nourse was quickly assailed by Senator O'Mahoney, Wyoming Democrat, for making what he called "merely a political argu ment against FrBressive po licy." But this seems a some what odd criticism, for Nourse had just resigned his post on the ground that the council is en meshed in political issues and Democratic party programs when it ought to be a strictly pro fessional advisory body. It strikes us that Nourse has done good service in sounding his warning. There is a great ned to clear the atmosphere in this highly emotional debate over the "welfare state." In the first place, no lalr-niind-ed person .can deny the right of the ordinary citizen to reason able security safegurads in to day's uncertain times. But to acknowledge that right does not mean to lower the bars to an endless flood of demands for help of all kinds. Frl., Oct. 28, 1949 Th N.wi-R.vl.w, Roseburg, Or.. 7 It is a very delicate task to develop needed security meas ures and still maintain the eco nomy in its full productive vigor. Yet if due thought is not given to the country's basic economic health, security programs will become pointless. We , find it increasingly tire some that those who do not un derstand the relation between productive wealth and security should see fit to attack as un progresslve everyone who does appreciate the connection. Not all critics of unbridled spending and unashamed pressure raids on the treasury are preachers of dark reaction. We are approaching the time when elections will become con tests to reward the party which provides or promises the great est favors to ihe greatest num ber of pressure groups. If that time ever actually arriver, the federal government will be the prisoner of a give-away psycho logy that it, has done virtually nothing to discourage. Fotv the genuine welfare pf America's citizens, that time had better not come. We ought rather to heed Nourse's advice. We ought to think more about put ting something into the economy and less about taking something out. We should stop looking for a free ride. Legless Boy Scout Given Eogie Badge At Rites SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 28 Don Lee, 17, won Ills Eagle Scout badee Wednesday night.. His guardian, Miss Anna Rosen kilde, pinned the award on him at a court of honor. Don had to come back from Logan canyon, where he had been hunting deer, to be present for the ceremonies. The West high school junior didn't get any deer,, .but he had just as much fun as he always does in deer season. Don hunts from a horse. He does everything else including such athletic stunts as rope climbing and swimming on ar tificial legs or with none at all. His own limbs wer" amputat ed when he was a baby and suf fered severe burns.
