J I RIIS Favored To Win Tonight Over Bulldogs Visiters' Record So Far Not Good, But Local "11" Not Up To Full Strength Some live-wire gridiron action 1b ilated for tonight at Ftnlay field, when the Bulldogs from North Bend tussle with the In dian! of Roseburg in a district clash starting at 8 o'clock. . On paper, the Indians should take this one, but there's no tell ing what the final score will be if the near cellar-dwelling coast city club decided an of a sudden to come up for air. North Bend under Coach Ben Holcomb has had tough sledding most of the season and are about due for a win. Roseburg's Ccce Sherwood knows this only too well and he isn't too happy about the prospects. Numerous injuries and illnesses leave gaping holes in the Rose burg line, while the visitors will be packed with experienced and lot It red players. Wjth such heavies as Don Parr and Dlz Burnett expected to be out for tonight's tussle, Sherwood may rely on an aerial blast by Quarterbacks Ronnie Strickllng and Mickey Coen to turn the trick tonight. The visitors also favor the air lanes for touchdowns and fans are warned to be prepared to suf fer a stiff neck from watching I r, I I I I I We'll repair your car juit likt new if you havi a misfortunate accident. Last week Medford beat the Papooses by a decisive 38-12 score. The Roseburg eleven will try to mHke up In spirit what they lack In size. Coach Frank Purdy, who is assisting Turner, said the Medford Junior high school team la "bigger than the Indian var sity." Oct. 28 -UP) unce again the over-worked cru cial bobs up In the athletic af fairs of the University of Cali fornia and the tightening race for the Rose Bowl In the Pacific Coast conference. The unbeaten Bears nlav UCLA and the contest, he top one In the conference this week, may be a wilder thing than the Bay people suspect. California has won fiv! straight games this season In its bid for a return engagement in the Rose Bowl New Year's day. Two of ine inumDns. over scutnern Cal ifornia and Washington, are of tne ail-important conference va rietv. The UCLAns have not been beaten In four conference en gagements, their single loss to independent banta Clara mean ing nothing in the rich Rose Bowl scheme of things. Thus the "stop Cal" campaign here dominates the coast scene. but there are other tussles of in terest on tap. Southern California's Trojans, praying for a UCLA win over Cal bemuse they get a crack at the UCLAns Nov. 19, figure to hand unhappy Washington Its fourth defeat of the conference race. This one is at Seattle. Stanford can look for a rough afternoon at Palo Alto with San ta Clara. Oregon State and Washington State, each with two wins and three defeats, play to see which one win emerge with a .sou av erage. Oregon, which whinped USC for the first half and tlien folded up completely, travel Into Big Ten territory to play Iowa: Idaho takes a breather with Portland University at Boise, and Mon tana engages eastern Washing ton at Missoula. Off their records, California rightly Is favored to get pt..st UCLA. The Berkeley Bears whip ped Sanla Clara, 21-7, and Santa Clara blanked UCLA, 14-0. Cali fornia has far the better offen sive and defensive record and much more depth of material, particularly In the line. But the Bruins have generated a lot of the stuff known as spirit and on occasion have shown tre mendous fondness for solid block ing and tackling. They have done far more than expected and some 70,000 homecoming day wit nesses may get more than they expect in a football game. This observer, with a peculiar taste for banging his head against rigid objects, predicts wins bv Southern California over Washington, Iowa over Oregon, Oregon State over Washington State, Santa Clara over Stanford, Idaho over Portland, Montana over eastern Washington, and swinging way out like the daring young man UCLA over Califor nia. The title contenders are two of the classiest grapplers in the business and their spectacular and action-packed tactics are certain to give local followers one of the best matches of the season regardless of the possi ble importance of a future cham pionship engagement. Klser, with his drop-kicks and aher fleet-footed maneuvers, Is the more sensational of the two. But no wrestler has a better fundamental background of the sport than LaChappelle, Indicat ing the bout will be a blistering battle. As for Karlinko, the so-called "Mad Russian", is the only man with a grudge. He hates every one, including the fans, and Sto jack will likely take advantage of Karlinko's wildeyedness. The former Tacoma cabinet-maker is a workmanlike wrestler who never gets ruffled.
