DANGER TO CAME FISH prompted Ron Newcomb. reiden
fiih bioloqiit, to poiion this mill pond (II et Myrtle Creek,
owned by the Fir Manufacturing company. Newcomb laid the
pond was overrun with goldhih, which evidently were placed in
the pool leveral years ago by someone cleaning out e private
pool. As omnivorous fish, they would constitute e danger to
aame fish if thev were to escaDe or find their wav into other
waters. These goldfish eat "just about everything," according to
Newcomb, and multiply so rapidly they take over any water
area they inhabit. 12) Newcomb, in his rubber boat, spreads a
vegetable poison which suffocates the fish forming blood clots
in the gills. 131 Pointing to an area where the poison has taken
effect, Newcomb indicates the underwater antics of the stricken
fish. 141 Newcomb poses with two of his "catch," the siie of
the goldfish indicating the amount of damage they can do when
feeding off small trout and salmon or robbing them of needed
food. I Pictures by Pa'jl Jenkins I
