Attorney Kwln Werleln, the hoard member who sought lite ban, said the 2.221 civic students may have to go ahead and use the book at least temporarily. He said no other texts are available. . In seeking the ban, Werlein had said the paragraph might cause the youngsters "to think Socialism and Communism are good." News of the action caused com ment yesterday from Mrs. Krank Magruder. wife of the book's author, that her husband "def initely is not a communist," and "it looks like somebody Is on a witch hunt." Charles Bacon, senior partner of the book's publisher. Allyn & Bacon of Boston, said he believ ed that the board would have been satisfied with the 1949 edi tion's statement about capital ism. Ntw Edition Corrective Most of Houston's students have the 1945 edition the one adapted after the state textbook ;nmittee had approved 't. It doesn't have the paragraph carried by the 1947 edition, but Includes similar material In a footnote. Increases In enrollment caused purchase of some of the 1947 books, and the board got hold of one of them. It took action without noting the fact two edi tions of the hooks were being used in the schools. The paragraph In the 1947 edi tion says the United States Is called a capitalistic society, but does not have pure capitalism.
