Longshoremen
Ask Judge Change
At The Dalles
THE DALLES, Oct. 26.-(.TV-Efforts
to get rid of longshore
i pickets here by court injunction
were halted Tuesday when Long
shoremen asked for a different
Judge.
The port of The Dalles had
asked that CIO longshoremen be
restrained from picketing or
otherwise Interfering with port
activities.
Leo Levenson, attorney for the
longshoremen, filed an applica
tion asking that a different judge
than Circuit Judge Malcolm W.
Wilkinson be assigned. The appli
cation was a straight request,
without any reason given.
Its effect was to halt all pro
ceedings U'ltil the state supreme
court acts on the application.
Pickets continued to stroll In
front of the Port commission's
riverfront terminal.
The longshoremen, who pre
vented unloading of a Hawaiian
pineapple barge, last week said
they no longer had a dispute with
the pineapple company but were
holding the Port commission un
fair in failing to hire CIO long
shoremen for deepwater cargo un
loading. Locally hired non union
workers had initiated the barge
unloading effort last month.

So many of the fairer sex have requested pictures of Bob Moon,
emcee of the week-day "Ladies First" airer (11:00-11:30 a. m.),
that something had to be done about it. Moon celebrate his 30th
birthday on Monday, October 31. To anyone sending a birthday
greeting to the youthful emcee, the net will mail a double photo
one as he looks today, the other as he looked 30 years ago. Listeners
should mall their requests to Bob Moon, "Ladies First," Mutual-Don
Lee Broadcasting System, Hollywood 28, California.
A hankering to sing and to bt heard or seen, plus help
from a friendly usher at Don Lee who furnished a left-over
ticket to the TV version of "Whet's the Name of that Song?"
proved out for on Hollywood show-business aspirant. Com
blned, they spelled success for Tony DuGuy, 28. After one
audience participation showing on the show, he was signed
for a series of eight western movies by Republic Pictures
and Lippert Productions. Alice Coulter, of the Vltt Agency,
was televising that night and Immediately began checking
on Tony. He was signed for pictures but, typically, not
In a singing capacity. He'll play "heavies" In the westerns.
Carlton E. Morse's "I Love a Mystery" is gaining avid listeners
as an across-the-board evening whodunit. It's strictly a translation
of the soap-opera into the thrillcrdiller claslficatlon, grooved for
a masculine market. First episode on KRNR was Monday, October
17, with a trio of heroes, who, in the space of fifteen breathless
minutes had Involved themselves In enough adventure to easily
absorb an hour's activity. The chapter ended of course with a dyed-in-the-wool
cliff-hanger finale. The whole affair left the cast breath
less. Producer-writer Morse got across some differentiation of
character among his three insurance investigators: Jack Packard
plays a suave leader; Jim Bowles, a westerner with an eye for
femmes, and Tony Randall, a not-very-bright strongman. "I Love
a Mystery" is a Monday through Friday feature on KRNR , . .

Truman Urged To
End Coal Strike
(By the Associated Press)
Soft coal retailers said Tuesday
that thousands of people In hun
dreds of cities are unable to buy
fuel for home heating.
They urged President Truman
to act immediately to end the coal
strike. They said the coal "emer
gency" is greater than that in
the steel strike.
A strongly worded telegram,
dispatched to the President by J.
Atlee Schafer, president of the
American Retail Coal association,
declared that "a national emer
gency in the bituminous coal con
suming area exists right now,"
and if the government fails to
take immediate effective action to
end the strike, "tragic conse
quences for the people of the
United States" will follow.
The word at the White House
was that the President still had
no plans to intervene in the disputes.
