STANTON JIany people are still living who can recall the odor of the fuel used In early-day "gas buggies." Gasoline then was not much better than the "coal oil" commonly used in lamps and lanterns. It is a far cry from the foul smelling fuel furnished for early-day motor cars to the high octane, ethyl gasolines of this day. The motor industry is engineering new and better power plants and as these engines come off the production line, fuels will be available to bring about their best performance, for the oil industry is not working only on today's product but also on the fuels and lubricants that will be needed tomorrow. We had opportunity to glimpse hastily some of the prepa rations to meet future demands as we were conducted through the marvelous laboratories in the research division of the Standard Oil company of California in Richmond. The inspection trip was made in company with 37 editors from western Washington and western Oregon at the com pany's huge refinery at Richmond. We were shown crude masonry stills in which the first gasoline was produced and then toured acres of modern fractionation towers, storage tanks and treatment plants from which comes the highly efficient fuels and lubricants serving America's industrial and transportation machines. We were taken into laboratories in which endless corridors were lined with rooms where highly-skilled technicians con duct their studies into Improvement of petroleum products. In one section we found automobile and truck motors of almost every make under the most rugged tests. Attached to devices measuring fuel consumption, pressures, lubrica tion, etc., these motors are run continuously, week after week and month after month, until they finally break down. Skilled mechanics then take the motors apart, study wear on every moving part, test metal for structural changes, and gather any pertinent information which may aid the scientists in producing a fuel or lubricant to give longer motor life and better performance. Because researchers need many gadgets not otherwise available to perform complicated processes, the laboratory maintains machine shops and glass blowing departments in which apparatus is manufactured. . The research division Is known as the California Research corporation, and from its many departments have recently come such things as "soapless soaps" detergents manu factured from petroleum non-flammable hydraulic fluid for aircraft, and a new process for manufacturing phthalic anhydride, an important ingredient in plastics and high grade paints. ce T'a vlk' III laakk - - " " ' u -r i I I f L "aV iiw'-O -KL. There are so many contradictory claims about what various waidies will do that a few facts can come in mighty handy. Her are a few facts that can help anyone about to purchase a watch to get a watch to suit his job or his expectations. 1. 17 jewels or ony higher number do not necessarily guarantee qual ity. 17-jewel wrist watches may be had for as little os $19.50. These watches usually ore of no better quality, nor are they capable of any more . accuracy than a 7-jewel wotch for the same price. That is because finish and precision are more important than the number of jewels. 2. Any watch from the 7-jewel watch selling for S 1 9.50 to the finest solid gold watch selling for hundreds of dollars are copoble of accurate time keeping service. This service does not depend so much upon the name or make of the watch as it does upon the workmanship of the watchmaker who repairs it. If you have a watch that is not running properly, it is not the fault of the wotch it is the fault of the person who last repaired it. Even if it hasn't run from the day you bought it, this is true, because most new wotches need cleaning soon after they are purchased.
