Asia To Be Rid Of Alien Rule In Five
Years, Prediction Of India's Leader
By DEWITT MACKENZIE
AP roraidi Affitn Analyst
few visitor! to America hive attracted such tuatained Intercit
to their expreision of vlewi at hai Prime Miniiter Nehru of
India.
Thif ii due in part, I lake it, to the directness and clarity with
which he attack! the paramount Issues of he day, and in pail
to the fact that In him we apparently see the great new leader of
aouheait Asia's million!. It it for this reason that this column
reurni to further comment on hia opinion! ai one of the outstand
ing cerionalitiei of our time.
For examDle. in an address be
fore the Oversea! Press Club of
America in New York' Nehru

East. The prime minister declar
ed that "next to hunger, nation
alism In Asia still is the primary
urge." He said that ultimately
the Orient must "play a very Im

world's wealth, and rid itself of
foreign rule.
Nehru then made the startling
prediction that "four or five
years" will see the last vestige
of alien rule in Asia.
That prophesy has a peculiar
Interest for our column, since we
have been insisting over a lone
period that the day of empires is
rapidly coming to an end. The
time when "mother countrie!1
can dominate peoples of another
race is all but past.
"Four or five years" nny seem
like a very short time to finish
clearing Imperialism out ot Asia.
Still, we must listen with respect
to thf man who, more than any
other excepting the late Mahatma
Gandhi, was responsible for the
winning of India's freedom.
"Btttse Lif" Will Survive
Another viewpoint of the Asiat
ic leader was expreased at a re
ception given by the United Na
tions Correspondents association
of Lake Success. During an in
formal question period one of the
newspapermen asked Nehru
whether he thought Marxist and
Capitalist societies could live side
by side indefinitely.
"I don't think so," the prime
minister replied. "It Is possible,
but ultimately one will Influence
the other. The society which de
livers the goods the better life
will survive."
By "better life," Nehru was
taken to refer not only to mate
rial thing but to spiritual and
cultural matters. Of course to get
the full significance of this ap-
Rraisal you must know Just where
ehru stands ideologically. As
this column has reported previ
ously, the prime minister is a
moderate socialist, who believes
In following a middle course pro
viding for nationalization of soma
Industries but leaving plenty of
Dthers free for development by
nrivate initiative.
In short Nehru alms at combin
ing what he regards as best in
both systems.
