Mod ford had always beaten Rose burg, usually by big scores, and townspeople scoffed at the possi bility of Roseburg upset vic tory. Plans Completed For Grade School Football Games Final plans and schedule ar rangements for the grade school football season were made last night when grade school coaches met with Athletic Director Cece Sherwood. Two divisions from each grade school will open the season on Flnlay field Saturday morning, Oct. 1. Each school will field a team called the Heavies, so term ed because each boy is in the 73 100 pound weight class, and an other team called the Peewees for youngsters under 75 pounds. Games will be played simultan eously the width of the field. Included in the schedule is a grade school Football Jamboree, to be staged at halftlme of the Roseburg-Cottage Grove game dated here Oct. 21. Phone 302 Tyler Liberty Round-Up Of Boy Scouts On In Local Area The 1949 Liberty round up of the Boy Scouts of America Is in full swine in this area. Max B. Jemen. scout executive of the Oregon Trail Area council, an nounced today. In all districts, Cub Scout oacks. Bov Scout troops and Ex plorer units are going forward with an intensive program of fun and activities. With the lowering of the entry age of Cub Scouts to 8, thousands of boys are now join ing this great nationwide pro gram who were not previously old enough. The Oregon Trail Area council program for the area-wide Liber ty round-up includes a lormai roll call in each unit, a uniform inspection and a series of lead ershlp training conferences and roundtables. All of these activi ties are geared to the 1949 theme of ".Strengthen the Arm of Lib erty, a nationwide crusade in stituted by the Boy Scouts of Am erica last February. Established in 1910, the move ment will celebrate its 40th an niversary next year. A high point of this great celebration will be the second national Jamboree to oe neia at valley Forge, Pa., from June 30 to July 7. A dele gation of scouts and leaders will attend from the Oregon Trail Ar ea council. Band Parents To Meet On Tuesday First meeting of the Band Par ents association of Roseburg High school under the leadership of the association's new officers will be held at 7:45. Tuesdav Oct. 4. In the high school band room. H. B. Ott, president, announced that parents of every band stu dent, whether of the grade scnoois or tne nigh school, are not only welcome, but their mem bership is solicited. "We are looking forward to an active and happy year in the as sociation and we have certain ideas of administration that v-e shall try to follow to best serve the band organization." Ott said, "We are striving to so arrange committee work that everybody will have his share of the load to carry and his particular re sponsibility will still be very Im portant to tne overall program. Smog Puts Plane Down Near Glide Smoky skles.and an emergency landing brought surprised visi tors to tne Glide Ranger station early Tuesday evening. Milton Andrews, ranger of the South Umpqua district at Tiller, had been flying over his district checking smoke, when he sighted a suspicious spot In the Big Cam as area of Diamond Lake dis trict. His pilot, Hatfield, of the Trl-Clty Flvlng service and own er of the two-place Piper Cub in which they were flying, put down at Big Camas where the smoke was reported. The plan was to take off and fly directly home, but heavy "smog" made flying dangerous and the plane again set down, this time an emergency landing on one of the vast fields of the Phil Strader ranch east of Glide. The two men showed up at the Glide Ranger station, where they visited for approximately an hour before flying conditions were again favorable. Hatfield, manager of the Tt1 City Air service, claimed no re lation to Glide's now famous "flying loggers" of that name. District Conference Of B. P. W.
