Wilson Of Oaks Tops Batters In Coast League SAN FRANCISCO. Sept. 28. (P) Oakland's speedy shortstop, Artie Wilson, and Seattle's Herb Karpel topped the Pacific Coast league batters and pitchers, re spectively, for the regular sea son, according to averages re leased today. Wilson, participating In 165 games, rapped out 211 hits in 607 trips to the plate for a .313 average. He also led the league in stolpn bases and batted in 37 runs. The Acorns' leadoff man failed to connect for a single four-base blow. Karpel had a 14-6. wonlost rec ord for a .700 percentage. He struck out 74 batters. Wilson was followed in the hit ting records by Earl Rapp, Oak land, .344; Irv Noren, Hollywood, .330; Joe Marty, Sacramento, .327, and Al White, Sacramento, .326. . The big stick of San Diego's Max West boomed out 48 home runs and drove in 165 tallies. He led the league in both depart ments. His average was .291. Most games won were by pitcher Guy Fletcher, Seattle; George (Pinky) Woods, Holly wood, and Hal Saltzman, Port land. They each had 23 victories. Fletcher and Woods lost 12 each. CP) Joe Louis Homes, Inc. Under this firm name, the former world's heavyweight seeks to build several hundred non-restricted homes on a 53-acre tract in the San Fernando val ley. Gordon Confident Of Early Knockout Over Culbertson Manager Ernie Nazelrod's trio of Roseburg battlers wind up their pre fight training In the local armory tonight in prepar ation for their appearance at the Portland Auditorium Oct. 4. Headed by Roseburg's rugged Babe "Hardrock" Gordon, the other two boxers are Mickey Gemmlll, slated for semifinal action, and Kenny Kaas, who will appear In one of the prelimi naries. The Babe Is scheduled to meet one of the toughest foes he has yet encountered in "Baby Dutch" Culbertson, clever Los Angeles Negro, in the ten-round main event. Gordon and his two fellow box ers will make their last appear ance on home ground tonight when they go through final work outs. Nazelrod will accompany the three fighters to Portland to morrow, where they will taper off before the Tuesday night bouts. Both Nazelrod and Gordon seemed confident of quick win over Culbertson. The Babe has been in training for over a montn for this bout and said he will go for a K. O. early in the fight. Nazelrod. Is predicting his boy will put .Culbertson away by the fourth round, "maybe sooner." Nazelrod said he considers this bout another step up the ladder to fistic fame. If the Babe gets bv Culbertson, he has been as sured of a match with the ris ing young heavyweight, Claren ce Henry, managed by Jack Dempsey, former world Heavy weight champion. And from thm on, Nazelrod said, "the sky's the limit" for the Roseburg slugger. Local persons desiring tickets for the coming bouts may get them by contacting Nazelrod. They will also be on sale at the Portland auditorium the night of trie tignt. Relocated Highway Misses Town Of Dexter EUGENE, Sopt. 28. The town of Dexter Is having traffic trouble, but the problem is not one of too much traffic. City fath ers fear there will be too little and that if something is not done there will be almost none. The relocated Willamette high way misses Dexter, 18 miles up the Willamette river from Eu gene. Access roads have been provided from the new highway south to the old one. but Dexter says it "ain't fair." UPl The Marion county grand Jury is go ing to think today about trying to make the parents pay for the sins of their children. Six youths have been arrested recently for sex offenses. The Jury will consider charging their fiarenta with contributing to de Inquency of minors. The theory is that the parents ought to keep their kids home nights. Hearing Set On Express Rates Boost Request SALEM, Sept. 28. UPl Public Utilities Commissioner George H. Flagg said Tuesday he won't con sider the Railway Express com pany's request for a 10 per cent boost in agricultural express rates until the shippers show what the effect of the Increase would be. Flagg said he would hold hearing here October 7 on the request. The boost would apply to com mercial shipments of fish, fruits, vegetables and nuts, butter, eggs, cheese, fresh meat and poultry, bakery goods, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages.
