President Trumarrs Qlsclosure
that Russia may have an atom
bomb appears likely to speed up
air defense planning without
changing Its direction.
This country's military leaders
have long based their thinking on
the possibility of Russia having
the atom bomb. They gave 1952
as the date the bomb probably
would be ready for military use
by a foreign power.
Friday's announcement Indi
cates Russia may be well ahead
of the estimated schedule. Among
defense officials, especially air
specialists, this news is consid
ered likely to hasten the develop
ment or tnese phases o( atomic
air warfare planning:
1. The United States must push
its Interceptor fighter program.
2. It must push the program
for a radar detection screen. This
program is barely underway In

came to the rescue Friday night
of a Californian menaced by four
knife-wielding Dutchers who cut
short an attempted holdup.
The butchers were pummeling
James B. Petersen, 19, of Oak
land. Calif., when detectives Jonn
Tyndall and Joseph Ponlckle ar
rived at the Clark Super Man.

The detectives said Peterson
held his hand in his pocket as
though armed in trying to rob
a woman clerk. Then he tried to
use another employe. Miss Ileen
Fort, as a shield. But the butch
ers, led by Edward Smollnski,
nabbed Peterson.
Peterson was taken to a hospit
al where 15 stitches were requir
ed to close a cut in his arm. lie
was locked up and held without
charge.
