Ot the early performances, plus the potentialities, the big cam paign now appears to lie among Southern California, Stanford, Oregon, California and Univer sity of California at Los Angeles. Washington is on the fringe. Southern California, the pre season choice of most experts to thunder home as the league win ner, made its 1H49 debut in auspi cious fashion Saturday. Before a nome crowa oi nearly bj.uuu, tne Trojans trampled Navy 42-40. Next Saturday's Los Angeles opponent for Southern California will be Washington State college, a learn that had to come from be hind in the last quarter to beat Montana, 13-7. Swift backs who swept the ends and timely passes brought Stan ford's Indians a 44-0 victory over Harvard. It was a jolting setback to the Crimson, making its sec ond football visit to the west coast in 76 years. The Stanford goal line has yet to be crossed. The week before San Jose State was a 49-0 victim. Stanford faces its stlffest test this weekend from a visiting Michigan team. Last year, Michigan, the mythical national champion, flat tened Stanford 49-0. Oregon, co-champion of the league last year, served notice with its 41-0 larruping of the University of Idahc club described as the strongest there in 25 years.
