Commerce Chief Expects Upward Economy Swing PORTLAND, Sept. 22 -4l Secretary of Commerce Charles Sawyer told directors of the Chamber of Commerce last night that he expected the economy lo perk up and improve In the months ahead. This was based, he said, on the assumption there would be no prolonged strikes in basic industry. He said there were some soft spots in textile and metal work ing industries of New England and in scattered points of the South and Mid-West. On the West coast, he said, the continued high production of fruita and vegeta bles was. giving some trouble to both growers and packers. Commenting on the British de valuation of the pound, Sawyer aid "I am Inclined to think theie has been an over estimate of the effect on our situation. There will probably be less price changes than have been anticipated in some quarters." Dtpendabl tm rtrrormancel JtSSWV C4N SAW la n ami aw III III aiiili ... a-, J ml 1 i i 1 Ifc I THIS WEEK ONLY!
