Makes Denial
Of Shooting
Dtftndont Takes Stand
In Own Dkfense As.
Long Trial Ntars End
Victoria Sanderi took th itand
in her own defense Tuesday, and
denied that ihe killed or had
any deaire to kill Ralph Mojon
nier. In answer to the questions put
to her by Defense Attorney Paul
E. Geddes, she declared, "I
didn't kill him. I didn't shoot
him. No, and I never wanted to
harm him physically."
During most of her testimony,
Victoria told her story without
prompting and without questions
irom her lawyers. She faced the
jury and spoke to them in a low,
well-modulated voice, hardly au
dible at times In other parts of
the courtroom.
. Oiscovtrs Body
Victoria told how she discover
ed Ralnh's body on the bed in
their home two miles west of
Drain. She called his name and
felt hjs throat to see If he were
still alive. Then she fainted.
In earlier testimony, Mr. and
Mrs. Dale Ka.-nsworth, neighbors
who drove Victoria and her baby
into Drain Oct. 28, 1947, testified
she told the youngster, "Your
daddy can never drive again."
"Not only do I have no recol
lection of making such a state
ment, I can see no reason why I
should have," asserted Victoria.
She told of visiting several
f laces In Drain to cash checks,
he had no recollection of the
amount of money she obtained,
but when she reached Portland
she realized she must have cah
ed some checks because of the
empty stubs In her check boon.
No Legal Right
Victoria testified that she had
had the check book because she
was the one "who took care of
things like that." Although she
admitted she didn't have the "le
gal right" to sign the checks,
when she and Ralph went shop
ping, she would fill in the
amounts and he would apply the
signature.
In Portland, she registered at
the Park Avenue hotel. Her reg
istration card from the hotel was
entered in evidence. She said she
purchased clothes for her bahy,
Paul, and a stroller for him. She
visited friends In Portland and
arranged for the baby's baptism
in the Catholic church. It was
at the suggestion of her friend,
Sister Ann Bornadette, that she
tent a telegram to Ralph.
Victoria was arrested by Port
land police as she sat in the par
lor of a Catholic convent with
Sister Bernadette. They took hpr
to the police station for ques
tioning. Mikes Aoousatlon
After questioning her about
the checks she had cashed in
Drain, the officers asked, "Why
did you kill the man you lived
with?" Victoria testified.
"They told me that I not only
had shot him, but that I had
walked out to let him die."
After Victoria was returned to
Roseburg, she was questioned
"numerous times" by "numerous
officers." At no time, she said,
was she advised that she could
have legal counsel. On the check
charges, the court appointed a
lawyer to represent her.
"They constantly accused me of
not only shooting Ralph, but leav
ing him on the bed to die," Vic
toria declared.
"Dutch Uncle,"
When Sgt. Edward L. Hicks, of
the Santa Monica, Calif., police
department came here at the re
quest of Ralph's sister, he told
Victoria, "I'm talking to you like
a Dutch uncle. I'm trying to help
you. They're going to Indict you
on a first degree murder charge
and hang you. Why not plead
to manslaughter and ynu might
go off Scot free," Victoria testi
fied. Victoria said when she cut her
finger on a medicine bottle In the
county Jail, details of finding
Ralph's body came back to her
and she freely gave a statement
of what she recalled to Deputy
Sheriff and Mrs. J. H. Williams,
then Jailer and matron of the
county Jail.
Others who testified Monday
Included Mrs. Mary L. Looker.
a neighbor, who said that al
though Victoria s house was not
always clean, she had seen It
when It was clean. She also testi
fied that Ralph "Ignored the
baby" and was not affectionate
toward it.
Fred Overcash. Justice of the
Peace Clarence Leonard, Vernon
Pouncey, city marshall all of
Drain, and State Police Sgt. Lvle
H. Harrell were all on the stand
brieily.

Rtoptnintj Of Schools
Colls For Extra Caution
Reopening of schools In all sec
tions of the state signals the need
for extra caution on the part of
Oregon drivers. Secretary of
State Earl T. Newbry reminded
today.
Newbry called special attention
to the 30-mile speed limit at
school grounds and school cros
sings, which must be observed
whenever youngsters are going
to or from school and during re
cess periods. Faithful obedience
to this law, the secretary said,
may mean the difference be
tween life and death if a child
should dash suddenly Into the
street.
Last year 458 school-age pedes
trians were struck by automo
biles, bringing death to 16.
Newbry also pointed out that
Oregon law requires motorists to
stop for pedestrians crossing the
streets in crosswalks within the
driver's half of the roadway. The
law applies with equal force at
crossings where there are no
painted lines marking pedestrian
lanes.
