Cement For Dam Movement Draws Heavy Protest PORTLAND tjpi Movement of more than a million barrel! of cement from Portland to De troit damsite on the north San tiam river was argued here Sat urday and decision was reserved. The question was: Should a permit be granted to Mild & Sons trucking service. Merced, Calif., to truck the cement? In opposition were railroad In terests, who would like the bus iness and the city of Salem which doesn't want the big trucks to Jam traffic through the city. Pat L. Nolet, representing the trucking firm, said 20 truck-trailer combinations would be used in the hauling. A total of some 30 to 40 round trips daily on a 24-hour schedule are contemplat ed, starting in June. 1950. and extending to May. 1952. Holiday and Sunday hauling is not plan ned but may be necessary at times to keep up with pouring schedules. He said it was believed Salem could be bypassed by routing trucks on Lancaster drive. Sal em's objections were withdrawn on that basis. At Salem, County Judge Grant Murphy said use of Lancaster drive had not been brought up officially. He Indicated he did not look on it with favor. R. II. Baldock, state highway engineer, said the truck hauling would be hard on the highways. Alfred Corbett, speaking for the Southern Pacific, Northern Pacific and Pacific Southwest Freight bureaus, asked that the trucking permit application be dismissed. The railroad brother hood's legislative League of Ore gon also voiced opposition to truck use. However, Sam Moore, traffic manager of Permanente Cement Co., a Kaiser firm, said the South ern Pacific service would not meet the need. The rail terminal is a mile and a half from the damsite, he said. If cement were pumped or blown across the river and up some 400 or 500 feet, the problem would be met only in part. A later move of the ter minus would put it three miles from the dam, he said. Interstate Commerce Commis sion and Oregon Public Utilities commission representatives, who heard the speakers, will receive briefs to Oct 10.
