K Korea Coddles (Turtle Declared 1,000 Years Old SEOUL, Sept. . (. No turtle ever had it so good. But then not every turtle is six feet long and 1,000 years old. The turtle downed a crock of wine the first thing when fisher men lugged him ashore a few days ago. The fishermen gave him a second crockful, then a third. He drained them without a hiccup. "Didn't hurt him at alt," Pres ident Syngman Rhee of the South Korean Republic told his news conference. When Rhee heard about the remarkable catch he ordered the turtle brought to the Seoul zoo. (Rhee takes the fishermen's es timate that any turtle that big Is bound to be 1.000 years old. f ishermen know more about tur tle ages than presidents.) Furthermore. Rhee has direct ed various official functionaries to find out the latest in the care and feeding of turtles. "It's an omen," Rhee bubbled. "It means prosperity for the na tion. Jackson Wtsttrn Chicken Flocks Hit By New Disease PULLMAN. Wash. Sept. i LV A disease new to western chick en flocks has started causing trouble for Pacific Northwest poultry men. Dr. E. H. Peterson, assistant professor of poultry pathology at Washington State college, said the disease has been known in the east for some time as epi demic tremors, a virus disease that usually affects chickens dur ing the first six weeks after they are hatched. A laboratory test Is necessary to detect the virus, he said. Symptoms include tremors of the head and some paralysis of the bird's legs and wings. Although the disease apparent ly does not affect adult chickens nor the hatchabillty of eggs. Dr. Peterson advises poultry men not to use any flock that has suffer ed from the disease for hatching egg supplies. Motorist Flout Bus Stop Law, School Head Reports ONTARIO, Ore., Sept. 6 (. School Superintendent Arthur Kiesz has popped up with a fear that Oregon's new law requiring motorists to stop for halted schocl buses is dangerous. Not that Kiesz objects to the law, which he thinks a good one. "The trouble is." he explained, "that the motorists don't obey it." The school superintendent said one school bus driver reported only two motorists had stopped for his loading and unloading bus so far. All the rest whizzed past often so fast he couldn't get their license numbers. Violators whose licenses are noted are being turned over to the state police. Kiesz said the danger lies in the fact that young sters, hearing that cars are sup posed to stop for school bue now, may not use as much cau tion upon descending as they did before. Senator McCarthy (R.-Wis.) said today he will insist that Frank Costello of New York, reputed "slot machine king," be called as a witness in the senate investiga tion of "five percenters." "I think Costello is a very nec essary and important witness," McCarthy told a reporter. McCarthy is a member of the senate Investigations subcommit tee which has been digging into the question of whether there has been improper influence in let ting of federal contracts. He has mentioned Costello's name sever al times during the hearings. On one occasion, McCarthy ask ed MaJ. Gen. Harry H. Vaughan, President Truman's military aide, whether Vaughan got any cam paign funds from Costello. Vaughan said he had never even heard of Costello and that he was sure none of the money came from him. Today, McCarthy said he wants to ask Costello "about a number of things that have cropped up in the investigation but I can't dis close them now or it would foul things up." The senate hearings are In re cess now, probably for about a month. Meantime, the staff and investigators are running down a number of tips and collecting data that may be disclosed later at public sessions. Government agencies are mov ing to shut their doors against five percenters. Chairman Hoey (D.-N. C.) of the senate Investigations subcom mittee recessed the inquiry while the staff studies the evidence tak en thus far. Unethical firms will be black listed and federal employes warn ed about taking favors, he said, adding: "It is my honest opinion that this procedure, together with the policy of decentralizing procure ment and the maintaining of ade quate, courteous and efficient in formation centers will cause the so-called five percenter to wane and die because there will be no need for his services." The term five percenter has been used to describe those who seek out government contracts for others for a fee usually five per cent. Ambulance Service Russian Troops Invade Iran, Iraq, Douglas Reports SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. S-fJP) Every two or three weeks Rus sian troops invade Iraq and Iran, says Supreme Court Justice Wil liam O. Douglas. He said In an Interview the Moscow radio had attacked his recent mountain climbing trip In the Middle East because of fear that an American might "find out what is going on." - Douglas said a Russian patrol, or company or battalion pushes 40 or 50 miles Into Iraq or Iran until It meets another patrol. Then there are a few shots and the invaders withdraw, he added. Asked if there were any pitch ed battles, he replied that there were not. "But there Is shooting." he said, "and a few men are killed every week. It is Just part of the war of nerves."
