' ' 7 ' Clothes and Courses of Study Favored Topics Younger Set By Lotus Knight Porter If anyone is wondering about the topic of conversation with which the young ladies pictured on this page are absorbed, the answer is easy clothes. The secondary sub ject pertains to courses of study, for the photographer's subjects are Roseburg misses preparing to enter Oregon's schools of higher education for the coming school year. Some are enrolling for their first semester. Others are returning to their respective schools to complete courses in which they have had previous work. Not all of Roseburg's young lady college entrants are pictured and listed, but the group shown on this page is representative of the larger number enrolled in various schools. Oregon State college at Corvallis will have the largest U percentage of Roseburg students. Willamette university at Salem is second and University of Oregon, third Danese Doak is the only 1949 graduate from Roseburg high school to choose a college out of the state She will attend Stephens college in Columbia, Mo., to study radio and dramatics. Stephens college this year has an enrollment of ap proximately 2200 girls, including students from each of the 48 states and from 20 foreign countries, territories and possessions. Miss Turner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Turner, has enrolled at Oregon State college and will major in secretarial science; Miss Poirot is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Poirot, and will begin her sophomore year at Oregon State college, majoring in secretarial science. Miss Holmes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Holmes will major in education at Oregon College of Education at Mon mouth, and Miss Doak, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Keith Bryant, is entering Stephens college at Columbia, Mo., to major in radio and dramatics. Being out-of-town at the time the above pictures were taken, other students planning to enter college this fall, are not in these photographs but include: Miss Shirley Helweg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Helweg, who has enrolled as a freshman at Willamette university; Miss Jan ice Plummer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Plummer, who will attend Lewis and Clark college In Portland ; Miss Georgene Shanklin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul R. Shanklin Sr., who will be a senior in the school of music at University of Oregon, and Miss Christina Trapalis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Trapalis, who will re sume her studies at Oregon State college. Miss helweg is vacationing at the coast; Miss Plummer is in California; Miss Shanklin has been visiting friends in The Dalles, and Miss Trapalis is spending a week with a group of friends from Oregon State college touring western Canada. Miss Shirley Helweg, Miss Lorraine Losee, Miss Kay Holmes and Miss Harriet Booth assisted with arrange ments for the group pictures. Roseburg and Douglas county have always ranked high in the percentage of students attending colleges and a great many in past years have gained outstanding recog nition for their good grades and in the many activities they have entered while in school. This year's enrollment of young ladies will no doubt be equally as capable and successful in the pursuit of their studies.
