A. Food Prlet Indix For Wtek Shows Declint NEW YORK, Sept. 1. (.P) The Dun & Bradstreet wholesale food price Index this week de clined to $5.78 from $5.86 the previous week, and was 16.2 per cent below the year-old level of $6.90. The Index represents the total cost at wholesale of a pound each of 31 foods In general use. Higher in wholesale cost this week were wheat, corn, oats, beef, butter, coffee, beans, eggs, potatoes and steers. Lower were flour, rve, barley, hams, bellies, lard, cottonseed oil, cocoa, peas and lamhs. Exonerated By FBI, Says Gen. Vaughan; Aid In Parole Of Black Marketer Denied WASHINGTON, Sept. 1. UPl MaJ. Gen. Harry H. Vaughan told the Senate's five percenter Inquiry Wednesday he had been Investigated by the FBI and had received a campaign contribution Irom lawyer who talked to him about a pardon lor a convicted liquor black marketer. This testimony from President Truman's military aide high spot ted a sometimes hectic session. Another dramatic development came when Senator McCarthy RWis withdrew an earlier statement expressing belief that Vaughan had not profited per sonally from any of his "deals." Vaughan made clear he co operated with the FBI in Its In vestigation of a charge that he had accepted a bribe in an In come tax fixing case. And Vaughan's assistant at the White House. Col. C. J. Mara, aid flatly the FBI had exon erated his boss. Both Vaughan and Mara also denied under sharp questioning that the FBI scrutiny concerned a charge that Vaughan had tak en money from liquor interests in return for efforts to get them more rationed grain. As for the campaign contri bution, VauEhan said he didn't think it "could have been over a couple of hundred dollars." And he denied it had any con nection with the parole matter. McCarthy named the liquor in terests Involved In the alleged reports as "Schenley" and "Cos tello." He said Frankie Costello, reputed New York gambling king pin; William Helis, horse own er and race track figure, and Phil Kastel are partners in a liquor concern. Tuesday Vaughan had denied any knowledge that any of the Democratic campaign contribu tions he received came from Cos tello. He said he did get a con tributionhe thought it was around $2.000 through Hells. Denies Parole Link In the clemency case Vaughan said Attorney William H. Neblett called on him in the interest of Robert Gould of Cincinnati, serv ing six years In the liquor black market case. "I don't think that had a thing to do with it, Senator," Vaughan testified when McCarthy asked him about a possible connection between the campaign contri bution and the parole Gould linally got. In fact, he said he only "thinks" Gould got a parole about a year later. Shortly before the hearing re cessed until tomorrow, McCarthy drew from Vaughan an acknowl edgement that he bought a car lor a friend. Mrs. Morris Cav annaugh of Spring Green, Wh. McCarthy said it was an Olds mobile purchased in 1947 and that it turned up In the black market 10 days later at a price ol $3,500. After the hearing, Schenley Distillers, Inc., issued this state ment: "General Vaughan never made any inquiry lor us and was never paid anything by us. nor asked to do anything lor us on grain or any other matter." Trade Agreement Fight At Present Session Looms WASHINGTON, Sept 1. (. President Truman and his democratic high command Wed nesday discarded suggestions of a stopgap extension of the reci procal trade agreement law. They elected to fight for the full pro gram at this session. Senator majority leader Lucas and Chairman George (D-Ga) of the senate finance committee an nounced the decision after a con ference with President Truman and Seretarv of State Acheson at the White House. They said that the president felt and that the others agreed that a compromise extending the trade agreement act until the next session is not feasible. Lucas said legislation to review the reciprocal trade agreement act for three years will be called up In the Senate when that body concludes a one-week reess. Aid WASHINGTON, Sept. 1.- The ambassador of Korea tppeal ed to President Truman Wednes day for military aid to help meet any possible attack by the Soviets. Declarlng'We are right on the spot," the ambassador. Dr. John Myun Chang, told newsmen that an attack on the new republic "appears most likely." "We need very quick action by the United States,'1 he said after a 15-minute conference with Mrs. Truman. He told reporters that he had conveyed a message from his president asking arms and am munition as quickly as possible. "We feel that there might be some Imminent danger ol attack from the north and we should be well prepared lor it," the ambas sador went on. (The communists occupy northern Korea.) "We have every high expecta tions of the passage of the mili tary aid bill (now pending in the Senate). We want quick action on the part of the United States in supplying us arms and ammuni tion to the maximum degree of allocation. We feel we are right on the spot and entitled to prime consideration. There is no time to waste." He said Korea felt President Truman is "doing his utmost to get all these things done and com ply with our request."
