DOUGLAS COUNTY W.C.T.U. 57th CONVENTION HELD The 57th annual conventionof the Douglas County Women's Christian Temperance Union was held at the Christian church in two sessions Wednesday with the president, Mrs. C. N. Currier, presiding at all sessions, which included devotional and Inspira tional messages by Mr. Ken neth Knox, Mrs. Emma Beckley and Mrs. Mae Taylor of Canyon ville. Reports were received from un ions in the county, Loyal Tem perance Legions and the Youths Temperance Council of Looking glass, In a gold medal speech contest, competing wre Miss Win nifred Williams, who gave, "The Streets of Chinatown;" Sylvia Rand, "The Better Way;" Mrs. Mary Southwick, "Warnings;" Violet Doge, "Dey's Somethin' a Gittln' Our Young'rens;" Mrs. Persis Vowel and Barbara Marsh, "Eight Go Forth." The Judges awarded the medal to Mrs. South wick. Featured speaker of the day was District Attorney Robert Davis, who spoke on the topic, "Some Problems of Law Enforce ment," giving a glimpse of the complexity and gravity of the sit uation and answering some ques tions from the floor concerning his work. Officers elected for the coun ty organization for the coming year were: President, Mrs. C. N. Currier; vice-president, Mrs. T. W. Coates; treasurer, Mrs. W. G. Shugart, and secretary, Mrs. George Leper, all of Roseburg. A memorial membership, hon oring Mrs. Maude Elsie McAllls ter, long-time member, who died in 1923, was dedicated to her bv her daughters. Young, out going supreme chaplain of Job's Daughters, has returned to Rose burg, following a trip to Spokane, Wash., to attend the supreme Guardian Council session, August 16 20. Her escort in the ceremon ies was her granddaughter, Miss Elizabeth Young, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Young, of Oak land, Calif. Also with them was the latter's friend, Miss Claire Hansen, member of Bethel No. 1, of Oakland. Calif., and Miss Paula Helweg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Helweg of Rose burg, who took part in the me morial service. A large delega tion attended from Oregon. Of particular Interest here is the fact that Mrs. Gladys Hall of Portland, past grand guardian of Oregon is the new Supreme Marshall. Mrs. Young is a past guardian of Roseburg bethel and past grand guardian ol uregon. fane previously served as a supreme officer several years ago, prior to ner appointment as supreme chaplain this last year. Thai's the formula for tenderness, Juicy and flavorful results. Hamburger Angostura To one pound chopped beef aJd 6 dashes of biiters. Broil or fry quickly on hot fire. The secret of hamburger Angostura Is to Keep them from being too well cooked. The Juices of the meat should mingle with the bitters, but not absorb them. If the meat is cooked for a short time the titters will impart a distinctive flavor. Too many cooks spoil the hamburger by over-cooking. Now let's take up another an gle of ground meat. Yes, o f course, the meat loaf. Let's be lancy and use this recipe o f Freda DeKnight's from her "A Date With a Dish." Company Maat Loaf One pound veal, ground, 1 nound beef, ground, 1)2 cup chop per green pepper, 1 medium onion, chopped, 2 cups bread rrumbs or mashed potatoes, 1 cup mushroom slices and Juice 12 cup celery, 2 tablespoons horseradish, 2 eggs, milk, 1 tea spoon garlic and celery salt. Add vegetables and bread crumbs to meat. Work In eggs and milk along with dry season ings. Shape into loaf. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and flour. Bake 5 minutes. Pour mushrooms 'xed with horseradish and cat sup over meat. Continue to cook another 1-2 hour. Sprinkle with parsley and serve. Make gravy if desired. Note: Mushroom soup may be used in place of sliced or whole mushrooms. For a good top-of-the-stove dish, cook macaroni according to the directions on the package and serve with a cheese sauce.
