Power Line Plan
Gets Senate O. K.
WASHINGTON. Aug. 2.5 UP--
The Senate approved Wednesday
construction of the Kerr-Anacon-da
power line of the Bonneville
Power administration In Mon
tana.
By a vote of 5 to 35 It wrote
language into the Interior De
partment appropriation bill to an
thorize use of money to build the
line.
The amendment was proposed
ny senaior Magnuson ID-Wash.)
The Senate Appropriations
committee had recommended
against the protect. Its construc
tion was approved by the Home
in passing tne interior bill.
It was the third setback for the
committee In the last two days.
Twice Tuesday during consid
eration of the half-billion dollar
Interior Department Appropria
tion bill a group of senators beat
down amendments to restrict
power line funds.
In most such instances wheie
it recommended cuts from the
amounts approved by the Houe
for transmission line construc
tion, the Senate committee rec
ommended that the Interior De
partment enter into contracts
with private ulilities to "wheel"
government power.
Where the Kerr-Anaconda line
was concerned, however, it sug
gested that before construction
be undertaken, further study be
given to the question of whether
it should be built by the govern
ment or a private utility.
This recommendation touched
off debate over the project.
Senator Cordon (It-Ore) said
the committee's action was
sound. He estimated the line,
along with an Anaconda substa
tion, would cost $10,000,000 and
that the committee was just try
ing to save government money.
The line is essential, he said,
hut should not be undertaken un
til it is determined if the govern
ment should build it or negotiate
with the Montana Power com
pany to do it and transmit gov
ernment power at ' reasonable
rates.
Senator Murray (D-Mont) an
swered that it is "perfectly ob
vious" that the Montana Power
company has no Intention of
building -the line.
