Oakland Is Now
In Undisputed
First Place Spot
By JIM HUBBART
AuocUud Praia 8porliwr1lr
Thanks to a tenth-inning sin
gle last night by San Diego's
Max Wes 550 miles away, the
Oakland Oaks today are in un
disputed possession o.' second
place in the Pacific Coast league
standings, four games behind
Hollywood.
The Acorns deserve at least
half of the credit themselves,
however. They lambasted Holly
wood again by a convincing 10
to 5 margin in an eighth inning
uprising which produced four
runs on four hits.
Pinky Woods, the Stars' strap
ping righthander, was the victim
as the Oaks hiked their series
edge to three and one.
West's contribution to the Oak
land cause was this:
Clouts Home Run
The Padre home run czar clout
ed his 39th round tripper of the
season early In the game to help
give San Diego a 5 to 2 lead over
Sacramento at the end of six
innings. But the Solons tied it
up in the seventh and it stayed
there until ol' Max stepped up
again in the tenth to single
Whitey Witelman across with the
winninr run. The score was 6-5.
The win gave the Padres a 3
to 2 lead in the eight-game series
and put the Sacs back in third
place, five games off the pace.
At Portland, meanwhile. Dr.
Francis Diereckx, the medical
profession's gift to organized
baseball, swallowed a bitter piil
last night. The good doctor was
unable to diagnose Seattle's bat
ting power, and the Rainiers
operated on him for a 5-to-2 tri
umph over the Beavers.
Dierickx lasted a little better
than two innings. In that time,
Jackie Albright touched him for
two doubles and Ed Coleman
smacked a home run. Later, Al
bright got another double and
two singles off reliefer Vince di
Bias!. That gave him five for five
for the night.
A pitching duel developed at
Los Angeles as San Francisco
edged the cellar squad, 2 to 1.
The Angels collected seven hits
off Harry Feldman and the Seals
got only three off Angel flingers
Don Watkins and Ken Gables.
Two of these, though, were hom
ers by Mickey Rocco, a former
Angel. His second round tripper
In the sixth sewed up the ball-game.

Elkron Btots Oakland
For Evergreen Tirlt
Elkton pounded two Oakland
pitchers for a total of 11 hits to
take a 7-4 decision and the cham
pionship of the Evergreen league
at Oakland Friday night.
The final win ended one of the
most successful seasons Elkton
has ever had. Although the Elks
will play few more games dur
lng he remainder of the season,
league play ended last night with
the championship game.
Pitcher Swearingen had more
to do with the outcome of the
game than any of his team mates
as he led the Elks in hitting with
two for four. Including two
doubles, and struck out 14 oppos
ing batters while allowing but
five hits.
Big stick for the losing Oaks
was Jones, who hit two for five,
including one double. However,
Oakland came up with the only
do"ble play of the game, from
Pitcher Cole to Kirkpatrick at
second to Telford on first

everyooe's surprise, the widow

You see Bob believed in lite

life assurance could do this.
Now Bob's widow receives a
constant income; her home is

lovely wife and family in the

Let's talk things over today!
