Mount Rainier national park superintendent, aid today that seven Oregon and Washing ton men had been lined. tor at tempting to scale Mount Rainier without complying with all park regulation. He laid one party, composed of Ted Howser. T. R. Howser. A. R. Case and Bill Woods, all of Port land, were warned Sunday not to attempt to climb above Camp Muir, located at 10,000 feet on the southern slope of the moun tain. The prohibition, he said, came when park rangers ruled they were not experienced moun taineers and were not properly equipped. The four reached an elevation approximately 2.500 feet below the 1.408-foot summit before ex haustion forced them to abandon the attempted ascent, he said. The stork made only two trips twins each time. A boy and a girl ,both reported doing fine, were born Sunday. The first set, also a boy and a girl, was born Sept. 10, 1948. Acheson Warns Germany Not To Abuse Freedom WASHINGTON, Aug. 18-(.W Secretary of State Acheson warn ed the western German Wednes day against abusing the freedoms permitted them by the western occupation powers. Acheson sounded the warning in a news conference discussion of Sunday's elections In western Germany. He hailed the results as a "victory for moderation and common sense." He noted there had been sharp criticism of the occupation pow ers during the election campaign He said he wasn't worried about that but: "Abuse of such freedoms may alienate western sympathies while falling to serve the best In terests of the German people." The Germans "may well It re minded," he added, "that they are exercising these freedoms only because they are privileged to live under the jurisdiction of freedom loving nations." Acheson simultaneously ex pressed himself as favoring the acceptance of the new West Ger man Republic In the council for Europe. The United States, he said be lieves this would be a construc tive step in the integration of a peaceful, freedom loving Ger many into the community of western Europe. The secretary emphasized any such invitation to the Germans must come from the European governments themselves that he would not presume to advise them to issue such an invitation unless they wanted to. 1. Latourette has declined to talk about his conference in Washington wiih Democratic leaders the past week. Latourette admit'ed that he had talked wih President Stat Again Urged To Buy Naval Hospital ASTORIA. Aug. 18 UPV-The state should reconsider its de cision not to buy for some $30, 000 the million-dollar Astoria naval hospital. That was the opinion State Sen. R. D. Holmes of Gearhart ex pressed in a letter sent to Gov. Douglas McKay. Holmes wrote that so far as he could learn, a legislature-authorized committee to investigate the site for possible use aa a boys' camp had never been ap pointed. He added that the hos pital facilities also offered pos sibilities as a Junior college. The board of control recently decided not to buy the property declared surplus by the govern ment. "It seems a shame." Holmes WTote, "that this million dollar facility be dismantled when the Hate could acquire it for some $30,000." Truman. Vice-President Barkley, Chief Justice Fred Vinson, Su I reme Court nominee Tom Clar and members of the Oregon con gressional delegation.
