Pictur) Two Grade Schools To Run On Double Shift System; Enrollment Boost Cause For the Unit tiro In the Roue-1 burs; school systpm't hldtory, tu dents will have to attend xchools on th double-shift aystem. "We undoubtedly will have to run double shifts in at leait two grade school at leant for tome time," City School Superintend ent Paul S. Elliott announced. Riverside and Fullerton grade schools will be the schools af fected. Elliott said It was "a! most a certainty" that the city's enrollment Increase will make this system a necessity. He said hours would probably he from 8 to 12:30 and from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Elliott said the city's school administrators regretted the need for the double shift classes but that an expected 2S00 student rec ord enrollment would make It a must. In spite of frantic building on the part of the local school dis trict, the cltys schools will be crowded as never before. A total of 21 new classrooms are under construction. Some of these will be completed early In the school year, but even then the enroll ment Increase will not be ab sorbed. Student Gain Ntw Buildings Rist But So Dots Total Of Pupils Exptcted Expansion! That one word explains the harassed look on the faces r ' '"te county's educators as the l-jiir-las county school system pre pares for the biggest year In Its history. County School Superintendent Kenneth Barneburg is the man who has the Job of coordinating the efforts of workers, planners, teachers and all other persons connected In any way with the rural school system. And, al though he Is a very busy per son, he will take time out for an occasional smile of satisfac tion when he views the mam- school consolidations. He said there have been no consolida tions In School district 4 for over a year. All of the Increase is a result of the birth rate and Immigration Into this area. Last year's total also a record high was 2,717 students enrolled tn th eity'i schools from the first crane through high school. This total ranked Roseburg In eighth Dosltlon In comparison to the largest Oregon school districts, ahead of Bend, Albany, Oregon City, Corvallis, LaUrand and Baker. SECTION TWO KENNETH BARNEBURO. The new Reeds port union nigh school will serve the entlr coun ty, west of the Elkton school district line. Construction Is also underway on high school build ings in Yoncalla, Oakland and Sutherlin. Elementary school buildings now partially completed Include those at Myrtle Creek, Canyon vllle, Green, Dillard, and Riddle. A new grade school building it scheduled for Melrose with con struction to begin sometime thii fall or winter. Drain's new grade school, completed - this spring, will be In operation with th opening of the coming school (Continued on Pag Five)
