Dr. Scott is former head Vaccines Available To Raisers For Deadly Black Disease Of Sheep High Profits In Steel "Unusual," Economist Says NEW YORK. Aug. 15 (.PI A steel Industry expert told a pres idential fact-finding board today that recent high profits In the Industry were unusual and would not continue. The statement was made hv Dr. Jules Barkman. an Associat ed Professor of Economics at New York university. Backman continued for a sec ond day his testimony before the three-man board named bv Pres ident Truman In an effort to avert a nationwide steel strike. He answered the testimony uf Robert R. Nathan, one-time" gov ernment economist who appear ed for the CIO steelworkers un ion when Its side of the case was presented to the board. "Certainly there is no evidence in the past which suggests the possibility or probability of con tinuous operations at or near the level that prevailed early this year." Barkman said. "With the disappearance of this unusually high rate of operations, the profits reported bv the steel companies also have melted rap irMv. Thus, in the second quarter of 1949, reported profits of steel companies fell about 25 percent bejow the first quarter total." Nathan had argued that the "phenomenal" steel profits of re cent months were proof the com panies could ray the 30 cents an hour "package "'asked bv the un ion without Increased prices. Travel Service Office Will Open At Umpqua Hotel MISS MARIEL MEANS The Roseburg Travel Service, under the management of Miss Mariel Means, will open Tuesday in the lobby of the Umpqua ho tel. This new service will, in effect, bring reservation offices of every airline and steamship company to Roseburg's doorstep. Acting as agent or sub-agent for such lines as United, Pan American, Northwest. American and West Coast airlines, and Cunard White Star, Matson Navigation Co., United States, American Presi dent and French steamship lines, and many others, the Roseburg Travel service will handle Infor mation, reservations and ticket ing. Miss Means reports. Free service will be provided, as the agency has commission arrangements with the various lines and thus is able to supply information and make reserva tions without charge to custom ers. The Roseburg office is affiliat ed with the Eugene Travel serv ice, maintained at the Eugene hotel, and will have the added feature of supervision from Rob ert P. Bronson, Eugene, who has had many years of experience in travel service. Miss Means, local manager, was born in Sumatra, Dutch East Indies, and lived in the orient for ten years. She has traveled through most of the European and Asiatic countries. She attend ed Oberlin college in Ohio and is a graduate of the University of Oregon, where she was a mem ber of Chi Omega sorority. Her father, Paul B. Means, is a mem ber of the U. of O. faculty. of the poultry departments at Kansas State college and the Uni versity of Connecticut. Plans for the pullorum testing and flock selecting school call for laboratory and classwork one day, August 19, and practical and written examinations the follow ing morning, Saturday, August 20. Among O. S. C poultry depart ment staff members to appear on the association program are Dr. J. E. Parker, department head, who will discuss ways and means of improving fertility 1.1 hatching eggs, and Dr. Paul Ber nier. breeding specialist, will speak on flock improvement through use of better male birds. Bennion is chairman of a panel to discuss producing and selling hatching eggs. Other members of the panel are: R. L. Schnetel, Mllwaukie; Llovd A. Lee, Salem; F. E. Fox, Corvallis; Conrad Burmester. Portland; and C. L. Lamont, Eugene. Feed dealers, field service rep resentatives, poultry producers and hatcherymen are all Invited to attend the meeting whether members of the association or not. Prevention rather than cure is the only effective control for black disease of sheep, accord ing to O. S. C. veterinarians who are authors of an experiment sta tion bulletin, No. 360, on this sub ject. While the bulletin Is a reprint of one issued 10 years ago, its reissue comes at a time when reports of losses from this dis ease are still common through out regions where fluke-infested pastures are used. While the common name is not considered very satisfactory by veterinarians, it has gained popu lar usage because the inside of pelts from diseased sheep take on a dark or black appearance when removed. The organism causing the dis ease was discovered in work of the O. S. C. experiment station and found to be definitely as sociated with liver fluke infesta tions. The trouble is sometimes confused with so-called hemor rhagic septicemia. Two methods of control are fol lowed. One is to clean up the fluke Infested pastures. The other more positive method is to make use of vaccines that are now ; available and which have been riving good results in Oregon over the past five or six years. HOT BARGAIN ROCHESTER. Ind..
