"MARRIAGE IS FINE.' Actor J'mmy Stewart, who avoided matri
mony for 21 years, kisses his bride, the former Glosia Hattrlck Mc
Lean, after their marriage In Brentwood Presbyterian Church In
Los Angeles. "Oh, boy, marriage Is fine!" Jimmy remarked follow-
. ing the ceremony.
Perennial Flowers From Seed Are
As Easy To Grow As Vegetables
To grow perennial flowers from
seed, it is far belter to sow them
in the early spring than to wait
for summer. There is no way in
which an amateur can save mon
ey faster than by growing nis
own plants of those perennials
which "come true" from seed.
Peonies, iris, and some others
take several years to reach flow
ering size, and then cannot I
depended to resemble the varie
ties from which seed were saved.
But columbines, delphinium, cor
eopsis, hardy pinks, shasta dais
ies, hollyhocks, pyrethrum. pan
pies, ar.ii many other lovely kinds
of the highest quality can be
grown to full maturity in one
year.
Many of them, sown early this
SDrinE. will give their first blos
soms before the season ends; and
for vears to come will be beauti
ful performers in your garden
pageant.
Amateurs who have found diffi
culty growing summer-sown pe
rennials are usually surprised a
the difference, when seed is sown
In the spring. The usual piactice
is to sow the seed in boxes, or in
a seed bed; then to tnnsplsnt to
parden rows as soon as the seed
ling plants are large enough to
handle. Give them sjace In the
row to grow until fall when they
will usually be ready to take their
place in the decorative border.
If you have vegetable plot, per
ennials can be grown there and
given the same feeding and culti
vation. Most of them are as easy
to grow as the vegetables.
Plants are difficult to grow In
large scale operations because of
the limited area over which they
can be distributed satisfactorily
and the high cost of packing such
fragile subjects for shipment.
The gardener who grows his own
nays only for the seed. The task
of caring for the plants and ob
serving their growth is a fascin
ating recreation, if he is a true
garden fan.

Vatican Names
2 New Bishops
In Slovakia
PRAGUE, Aug. 13. OPy The
Vatican has appointed two new
bishops in Slovakia in an action
which may cause a new clash be
tween church and state here, it
was disclosed yesterday.
The new appointees are Mon
signor Ambrosius Lazik, who has
been serving as apostolic admin
istrator of Trnava, and Monsig
nor Robert Pobozny, who has
been capitular vicar of Roznava
They are to be consecrated Sun
day. Both have expressed their
loyalty to the nation's primate,
Archbishop Josef Beran, by sign
ing his last pastoral letter. The
letter was issued June 26, and it
accused the Czechoslovak gov-,
eminent of persecuting the church j
and attempting to crush religious
liberty.
This pastoral letter has been I
denounced by the government as '
a "subversive and anti-state doc-
ument."
The possibility of a new state
church clash over these appoint
ments arises out of the unofficial
agreement under which the state
maintains the right to reject or
approve any candidate for bishop
proposel by the Vatican.
However, the Vatican diplo- j
matic representative here claim- j
ed this issue had been circum-1
vented. He said that the two new
Slovakian bishops were not named
bishops in residence but merely
titular bishops.
Unusual Data Turned In
On N. Y. City Heat Wave
NEW YORK, Aug. 13 m An
enterprising reporter has dug up
some unusual data about New
York City's heat wave that the
Weather Bureau doesn't supply.
While the official readine atoo
the Whitehall building in lower !
Manhattan stood at a record high
of 98.1 degrees Thursday, the re-,
porter went roving with a ther- j
mometer ana recorded these
temperatures:
103 degrees Inside a police
man's shoes.
130 degrees on a tiled rooftop.
93 degrees in an air-conditioned
elevator.
37 degrees In a plane 17,000
feet above the city.
After a quick thundershower
sent the official temperature
down to 81, the reporter said, the i
city was as cool as a cucumber i
In fact, cooler. A vegetable
stand cucumber was 92.
