LUNCHEON MEETING
The Busy Steppers club met
Thursday at a delightful twelve-
thirty o clock potluck luncheon at
the home of Mrs. Clemmie
Prock. Beautiful bouquets of sea
sonal flowers were used about
tne rooms and to decorate the
long serving table. The afternoon
was spent In visiting and doing
fancy work.
Prizes for the afternoon were
awarded to Nellie Ware and Anna
Ireland.

Henry Erskine Retires From
State Highway Department
After Service Of 28 Years

Henry Erskine has come to the

man with the choice of a career
Erskine, a maintenance fore
man, has come to the end of his
service with the state. He was
retired Saturday and now, at his
home at 909 Cobb street, "I'm go
ing to do ax I please!" he said.
A native of California, raised
In Red Bluff where his fathpr
operated the Railroad hotel, Er
skine has "worked from the time
I was seven years old," so he
doesn't plan to be idle in retire
ment. Besides having a large garden
to care for and a housp to paint.
Erskine spends time at his little
river summer camp, 30 miles
east of Roseburg, which he leases
from the government. He also
owns a ranch south of Roseburg.
Once Coal Miner
While Erskine was still young,
his parents moved from Califor
nia to Medford. Eventually he
went to Portland. During World
War I he worked In the coal
mines for the Oregon-Washing.

But he's gotten the greatest
satisfaction from his job with the

an opportunity to do construction
work, which he enjoys.
Seven years ago, when a chap
ter of the Oregon State Employes
association was organized here,
Erskine was elected first presi
dent of the local group.
Erskine and his family have
lived in Roseburg since 192l, with
the exception of three years,
when they lived at Myrtle Creek.

Filipino President Asks Congress
Aid To Stem Communist Tide In Asia

Philippine President Elpldio
Qulrino Tuesday urged the United
States to support a non-mllltary
Pacific union once it has been
formed to help prevent Asia from
being lost to communism "by
tiefault."
Qulrino, here on an official
visit as guest of President Tru
man voiced his plea for U. S. as
sistance against the "advancing
tide of communism" in a speech
before the Senate.
He also spoke before the
House. The major part of his
senate speech was devoted to
the Pacific union Idea In which
the. Philippine chief executive has
taken the Initiative.
The Idea got rolling about
three weeks ago when 'Qulrino
and Chinese nationalist leader,
Chiang Kai-shek discussed a pos
sible Pacific pact against com
munism In the Far East. Chiang
is now in southern Korea talk
ing over the same plan with
Korean President Rhee.

D. Scudder, 67, faculty member
at Oregon State c-jilege for 38
years, who retired In 1945 as
piofessor of agronomy Is dead.
He once had charge of all agri
cultural experiment stations In
the state and was connected with
the Federal Land bank.
He died at his farm home near
Sheridan Monday, three weeks
after suffering a sttoke. Surviv
ing are the widow; a son, Rooert
D. Scudder, Crescent City, Calif j
and 1 daughter, Mr. Vern D.
