Russian charges that he had been
spying on them.
Douglas, who aroused Soviet
suspicions when he and his son,
Bill, 17, went mountain climbing
in the Middle East, talked with
reporters after calling on Presi
dent Truman. He said with a
laugh that his seven-week Jour
ney abroad was "purely-a pleas
ure trip."
The justice and his son visited
the front in Greece and brought
back a picture of Greek guerrilla
forces captured by the govern
ment. He said about 35 per cent
of the guerrilla. lighters are
women.

it easier for businessmen to borrow money and easier for Uncle
Sam to borrow, too.
TJie idea is a double-barrel one to put a brake on the recession
and to make the treasury's start of deficit financing less painful.
It comes at a time when buying-on-tlme Is climbing again, when
past-due accounts are increasing, and when taxes are at an all-time
peak. No wonder the financial picture makes you dizzy.

credit outstanding to consumers
was $16,141,000,000, higher by $1,.

took to fight the recession. Ap
parently, the caster terms have
induced more people to buy on
time.
Installment buying of such
things as autos and household
appliances has reached a new
high at more than $9 billion.
Charge accounts and other forms
of non-installment credit has ris
en to $7 billion. Against this rise
in consumer credit, the credit re
search foundation reports today
that In the last six months there
has been a definite slowing up of
collections in the manufacture
and wholesale fields. Past -due
accounts now average 7.5 per-1
cent. A year ago the average
was 5.5 percent.
Factors cited In the rise of
change from a sellers' to a buy
ers' market, the pinch of compe
tition, management inexperience
in dealing with postwar finances,
and the Increased cost of con
ducting a business.
