Vaughan, President Truman's military aide, was "one of his closest friends" and IB) he "could and did go to the White House at any time." Grindle's statements to a New York newspaper last June touch ed off the subcommittee's inqulr into claims of influence in the awarding of government con tracts. Hunt, now a management coun selor in Washington, once w.-j a lieutenant colonel in the quarter master corps and worked for a while for the War Assets admin istration. Grindle said that while he was negotiating with Hunt, the for mer army officer told him he was working on "a $200,000,000 deal for plane parts." Grindle quoted Hunt as saying the plan was to have plane parts valued at that amount declared surplus and then sold for $18 a ton to a syndicate Hunt repre sented. "He told me," Grindle testi fied, "that it was a leal which would make the taxpayers blood boil if they knew about It." Grindle took the stand after Secretary of Defense Johnson promised the inquiry group he will help "get rid of unscrupu lous men who prey on both busi ness and government by peddl ing Influence."
