Czechs Carry Out Threat To Resist Vatican Decree PRAGUE. CZECHOSLOVA KIA, Auk- 4. P Czechoslo vakia's communist-ruled govern ment has carried out its threat to imprison Roman Catholic priests accused oi supporting tne Vatican decree excommunicating Catho lics who are militant communists. The official Prague radio an nounced last nfht a village priest had been sentenced to eight years imprisonment for treason. .He was accused of refusing to admin ister the last sacrament to a sick old woman until she resigned from the communist party. The priest, Rev. Alois Fajstl, denied the charge. It was the first test of the Czech government's defiant stand against the excommunication de cree. The Vatican announced last month that all Catholics who militantly support communism would be excommunicated a church penalty barring them from receiving the sacraments and associating with faithful Catholics. The government, through Jus tice Minister Cepicka, promptly threatened that priests who car ried out the excommunication de cree would be tried on treason charges. . Branded High Treason Dr. H. Richter, president of the state court which sentenced Fa ther Fajstl, called the priest's ac tion high treason. He said any priest refusing religious rites to any person because of political party membership or loyalty to the state "Is in the service of an enemy power the Vatican aim ing to destroy the people's demo- i what a dollar buys at Red & Whliel Han't a chance for the smart house wife to stock up on foods at bargains! Hunt, key figure in the five percenter" Inquiry, was quoted today as saying he once saved a client $400,000 by getting the army to purchase a supply of DDT "bombs". Hunt's fee was $5,000. In a coDvriehted storv. the Washington Star said Hunt found the army was In the market for DDT bombs, and that the trans action was negotiated after he had conferred with MaJ. Oeneral Herman Feldman, army quarter master general who recently was suspended In connection with the five percenter investigation. Hunt, a lormer lieutenant colo nel in the army quartermaster corps, now is a management counselor in Washington. Re ports dealing with his activities touched off a congressional in quiry into allegations of the use of influence in the awarding of government contracts. President truman tola nis news conference today that he is not acquainted with Hunt. He made the statement when he was told that a case of 2,500 books of pocket matches inscribed "swiped from Harry S. Truman" was purchased last December by Hunt from the Universal Match company In St. Louis. Mr. Truman told a questioner he had not received any match folders from Hunt. Just before the president's news conference, Hunt's attorney, Roger White, told a newsman the matches were bought at the request of the White House for use on Mr. Tru man's presidential campaign trip last fall. The senate's special investiga tions subcommittee plans to start public hearings Monday In the five percenter case. Theterm has been applied to persons who charge a few, usually five per cent of the gross proceeds, for help In getting government con tracts for others. The practice Is not illegal. Vaughan's Aid Not Asked ' The Star said Hunt was asked whether he ever had sought the help of President Truman's mili tary aide, MaJ. Gen. Harry H. Vaughan, in getting favors for anyone. "I don't remember anything of any importance that I asked nlm to do for other people or for me," Hunt replied, adding that he considers Vaughan as "one of my very good friends." ' Vaughan has refused to com ment on what relations, If any, he has had with Hunt. But the presidential aide has said he knows about 300 persons in Wash ington contract operations. The Star said Hunt declared emphatically that he has not sold his services to clients on the basis of Inside information or in side contacts. He added: "I don't know of anybody In government who can be influ enced in the slightest degree." cratic regulations of our state." In Rome, a Vatican source sug gested the Czech trial may have been a "communist trick to try to discredit the church and its faith ful. Vatican officials have said that excommunication Is primar ily directed at the consciences oi wayward Catholics and requires no omcial execution by priests. Amarlcans Urge Trad Meanwhile, a group of four American educators and clergy men ended an eight-day visit to Czechoslovakia saying they found considerable differences of opin ion among the people about the church-state conflict. They recom mended that the u. . relax trade restrictions against Czechoslo vakia to promote friendship and understanding. Members of the group, who left for Budapest, are Jerome Davis, theologist; Henry Pratt Falrchild. member of the National Council for American-Soviet friendship; Benjamin Mays, president of Morehouse college. Atlanta, Ga , and the Rev. George E. Paine of Cambridge, Mass. The Czech army newspaper Obrana Lidu said Jailing of Fa ther Fajstl was only the start of the government's fight against the excommunication decree. "This Just sentence," the paper said, "must be a decisive proof to the Vatican that we are not afraid of its decrees and that we shall be merciless in the defense of our people's democratic regime." 1 m '3n-uL 1 mini U , LEGAL HOTICI NATIONAL FOREST TIMBER FOR SALE.
