(Picture by Paul Jenkins I ' Ten Girls Awarded Honors At Camp Tyee Council Fire Other Activities Reported Ten Camp Fire girls wore awarded the Tyee honor at Camp Tyee at the council fire held last Saturday nlRht at Council Rock. This la given the outstanding camper In each cahln. Each fjli l attending camp was presented a session honor, representing a gold nugget painted on a patch of brown leather, In keeping with the camp theme, "Frontier Da vs." Receiving the Tyep award were Sally Carew, Charlene Boyles. Jeanine Conn, Irene Rrewlnglon, Dolly Urben. Merle Hopper, Shir ley White, Patty Baldwin, Delia Mlddlcton and Dalcne Buscn bark. Camp has had similar activi ties for girls these first two weeks. Tuesday is known as "twin day" and each girl has a twin. Winners the first week were Sue Brown, a near six-foot coun sellor nnd Gail Lorenzen, a very small girl. Second week winners were Tonl St. Onge and Nancy Glle. Wednesday was devoted to hik ing. The campers were dlvlde-i Into three groups, the oldest tak ing off on an all-night hike; the Intermediate accompanying them half way and the third group taking their lunches to the O and C camp about a half mile down the road. Thursday was known as "Suds day" and the girls took their bar of soap to the river for a good washing down. Representatives from each cabin took part In the council fire Saturday night or the church service Sunday morning, the lat ter being held In an impressive setting under the trees overlook ing the Umpqua river. Eleven counsellors are assist ing the girls In a full schedule of handicraft, nature, camp craft, swimming, sports and games. Mrs. James E. C onn. member of the Roscburg Camp Eire Council, Inc., motored to camp last Tues day and at the regular evening fire told stories of Tyee tradi tions, including the "Black Pool." Miss Helen La r- kin. who recently transferred r Former Forester Here To Retire Newell L. Wright, who served briefly on the Umpqua national forest, Is to be retired by the U.S. forest service, July 31. He joined the forest service In 1!)33 and was assigned to the Umpqua forest as an inspector. He was transferred to Portland In 1944 to work in the timber management division, and in 1935 was made a logging engineer. In the capacity of logging en gineer he made Important tim ber appraisals and served as ad visor on stumpage values for oth er federal agencies. Prior to his employment In 1933, he had worked 'with the forest service as a guard during i summer seasons of 1910, 1911 and lOin 1011 an.! I 1912. After graduation from the School of Forestry, University of Washington, in 1913. he worked for 20 years with large timber concerns. He will retain his residence In Portland for the present and will engoge in consulting forestry work. Eventually he plans to build a new home on the shore of Puget Sound, near Bellingham. Circuit Court Suit Filed To Collect Payment Due Charles and Sadie Buxton have filed suit in circuit court against L. R. and Eileen L. Andrus. The plaintiffs ask judgment for SI. 800 as a .payment alleged due on the sale b property to the defendant. The total price for the property, located in the vicinity of Miller's Dillard subdivision, was $11,000. Carl Olson has filed suit to collect from Fred Bonoit the fol lowing amounts alleged due: $750 for labor which he claims he performed as a logger for the defendant, and assigned accounts of $1,490 as wages alleged due Charlie Lawson: $1,156 for wags and $103.51 for materials and parts alleged due Leon Lawson. A student at the Church Divin ity School of the Pacific, an Epis copal seminary, Gordon ia also a graduate of Oregon State college. During his last three years in college, he served as representa tive of the Eighth province on the National Youth commission. He has been the assistant at Saint Andrew's Episcopal church, Oak land, Calif., during the past aca demic year. During his term on the Nation al Youth commission, he was in strumental in organizing the Pro vincial Youth commission of this province, and was also one of the organizers of the first National Youth convention of the church, held in Philadelphia in 1946. Gordon will serve as assistant to Fr. Tyson until Sept. 1, when he will return to the seminary to complete his training for the priesthood. Portland Faces Walking Threat PORTLAND, July 30-P The threat of a bus and streetcar strike Sunday faces Portland. A long delay In promised ar bitration led AIL moiormen to call the strike to be averted only if arbitration proceedings start In the meanwhile. The union and the Portland traction company agreed March 31 on arbitration oi aemanas, in cluding a 25-cent hourly wage In crease. The long illness of 1 C. Stoll, chairman of tne roniana abor management committee, prevented the start. Stoll was to have been chair man of the arbitration board. The union in voicing Its strike threat proposed that the other two officers of the labor-management committee select another thairman. One of the officers rep resents employers, the other la bor. YMCA Children's Hour To Continue Over KRNR The YMCA children's story hour will continue next week with the story of "The Little Mouse That Wouldn't Take His Nap" belt." told Monday and the tale of "Why the Burro Lives with Man" Wednesday. Mrs. Opal Munson will tell both of these stories. The iollowlng week Mrs. Esther Geddes will tell about "Little Blac1' Sambo and the Baby Ele phant" and "Little Black Sambo and the Crocodile." Canyonville Men Attend Reedsport High Ceremony Guy Mc Gee and Huron Clough, Canyonville, were in Reedsport Monday evening to participate in the ceremonies of the laying of the cornerstone of the new Reeds port high school. The ceremony was conducted by the Gardiner Masonic lodge under the direc tion of Oregon grand lodge of ficers. Mc Gee, a director of the rural school board, represented the rural board from his district. July 30 .fV The senate stamped approval Thursday on a broadt-rmed mea sure expected to bring closer teamwork between the armv, navy and air forces and cut their multi-billion dollar annual costs. By voice vote it approved a compromise between Senate and House bills tightening up the original unification act of 1M7. Chairman Tydinga (D-MD) of the Senate armed services com mittee obtained senate approv-il after explaining that the com promise Includes most provisions previously voted by the Senate. The changes made, he said, were merely "clarifying amendments." The conference report now goes to the House. Tydincs said the bill "is I n manv respects the President's plan."
