Frl., July 29, 1949 Hatchery Work At Rock Creek Soon To Be Let The contract for enlargement of the state-owned trout hatch ery at Rock creek on the North L mpqua probaoiy will oe lei ear ly next week. State Game Director Charles A. Lockwood, visiting in Rose burg today, said a favorable bid was received by the commission from C. E. Hall, Portland con tractor. The bid was in the sum of $93,570. In addition, the game commission will purchase ap proximately $12,000 worth of wa ter pipe, to be installed by the contractor. Plans call for construction of dam and water Intake on Rock creek, to Increase the hatchery's water supply, construction of 12 new ponds, and erection of a res idence. Capacity of the hatchery will he Increased about four time. Facilities will be made available for hatching salmon. Lockwood Is making final In spection today preparatory to the award ol tne contract. The game department, Lock wood reports, is far ahead of schedule on its five-year hatchery construction program. Additions are being construct ed to Fall river hatchery near Laplne, Roaring river hatchery in Linn county, and the McKenzie and Wallowa hatcheries. Prepa rations are being made for con struction of a new hatchery di Rig creek, a coastal tributary of the Siuslaw liver. Oregon Girl Wins In School Safety Poster Contest Lois Bertoll, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Bprtoli of Port land, was the only Oregon stu dent winner In the nation wide : school safety poster contest, sponsored by the AAA last year, the Oregon State Motor Associ ation says. Lois received a certificate of commendation for "a superior poster which was highly rated, ; both for its quality of art work and its effectiveness for traffic : safety education," according to the AAA award. I The poster the Oregon girl sub- mltted was among the group from which the final winners were chosen. The school safety poster con test is sponsored each year and winning posters are reproduced and distributed by AAA clubs to schools throughout the country. In Oregon, the Motor Association distributes posters to approxi mately ISO elementary schools tnrougnout tne state.
