Definitions Of Various Ups And Downs In Business Cycle Given In Economic Lexicon By SAM DAWSON NEW YORK, July 26. (B If business jargon that has cropped up since you were in scnooi gets you so confused that accounts of the economic trend these days re mind you of the sports announcer shouting he's up, no, he's down," then there's reassuring news. Now you can get precise, un derstandable deflnlts of: Infla tion, disinflation, deflation, refla tion, and hidden Inflation. You can get explanations of business cycle, recession, boom, depres sion. You can learn how econom ists differentiate between deficit financing and bankruptcy. These and some 2.400 other terms are defined In "a diction ary of economics, out todav. Harold S. Sloan and Arnold J. Zurchcr compiled It and Barnes & Noble of New York published it. "Atomistic socletv." vou may be surprised to learn, has noth ing to do with the atom bomb. Kalher. It s an economy n which there Is a distinct prepon derance of small, Independent, producing units." The term might ixm up one of these davs. now that Washington Is reviving its peeve against "big business." Did you know there is a crude birth rat and a refined birth rate? It's crude to tell how many babies are born per 1,000 persons In any given area In a year. It's refined "to allow for differences In the composition of the popu lation" say, how manv births for each 1,000 women of child bearing age. The "hedonistic principle" does not apply to one who likes bana na splits. It's the economic the ory that "the desire for well being and wealth stimulates an attempt to attain them however repugnant the effort expended." The book looks further into the world of labor. It defines fink, moiety, quickie strike, scab. "The Iron law of wages" holds that "wages tend to equal what the worker needs to maintain a bare subsistence level of living." It's sometimes called "the brazen law of wages." And " f r I cl I o n a 1 unemploy ment," It seems, is caused bv Im perfections in the technical func tioning of the labor market." An example would be when you're tn one town and the Job you could have turns up in another. 'Poverty" Is not an unfamiliar term, alas, to some of us. But the authors remind you it Is a relative term, denotlne absence of comforts and shortage of ne cessities. Which would place It 7-zr By J. R. Williams Grass Reseeding At Abbott Butte For Sheep Planned An observation trip 'to the Rogue River national forest has helped prepare local forest serv ice officals for a grass reseed ing plan to be carried on at Abbott butte, according to M. M. Nelson, Umpqua national forest supervisor. . Nelson said that Fire Assistant Ray Hampton and Ranger Mil ton Andrews returned from the Rogue River forest today after inspecting an area which had been planted to grass for range use. In addition to the Abbott butte location with planting slated there next month, two additional sites in the Diamond lake area will be Inspected. Plans are to reseed to grass there next year with the ranges to be occupied by sheep Danas. rne sneep win be orougnt here from eastern Oregon to help relieve the crowded condi tions In that area.
