Tue., July 26, 1949 Senators Would Ban Recovery Funds For Socialist-Government Countries WASHINGTON, July 26-UP) Senator Kern (R-Mo) picked up support yesterday In his effort to ban US. Recovery funds for any European nation which continues to nationalize basic industries. Senator Wherry of Nebraska, the Republican leader, and Sen ator McClellan (D-Ark) announc ed they will back Kern's proposal, "I am happy indeed," Kern said, "to have these two distin guished senators Join me in this movement to halt the use of dol lars of American taxpayers to subsidize experiments in social ism In Great Britain, France, or any other of the participating na tions." Kern tried to have his amend ment attached to the foreign aid bill when it was before the Sen ate appropriations committee. The Idea lost there on a bto-9 vote. ' The measure would not fieny recovery funds because of indus tries already nationalized. It would become effective only in case oi future nationalization moves. The amendment Is aimed pri marily at Britain's socialization program. Kem said In a statement that Britain's labor government plans to take over the Iron and steel industry in England. These were the Instructions given to James McGinty, city attorney, who represented Myrtle Creek's mayor and council In a meeting at Portland Friday. McGinty said he submitted a copy of a preliminary plan which has been prepared by James R. Daugherty, consulting engineer of Roseburg. Myrtle Creek's officials had been ordered to appear at the meeting to show cause why they should not be charged with stream pol lution, in allowing untreated sew age to flow into Myrtle creek and the South dmpqua river. McGinty said today that At torney General George Neuner had been at the meeting and gave Myrtle Creek his support. Neuner told the State Sanitary authority of the city's growth in population and of its financial plight. Report of the meeting will be given to a special city council meeting tonight, said McGinty. city otllcials are planning to con sult a number of engineering firms regarding the construction of the proposed sewage disposal pianc. , Third summer activity day for the Gril Scouts will be held Wed nesday, July 27, at Umpqua park, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Mrs. Irma Sanders and Mrs. Allen Knudtson are to be in charge. This outing will be for the girls to qualify for second class nature and outdoor requirements. The activities will include Iden t'fication of trees, plants and flowers along a nature trail and the marking of trail signs for others to follow. A one-pot meal will be served. Girls of troop no. 3 will pre sent a demonstration of making bed rolls under direction of Ra Nae Cottrell. All girls, even those not now members of the Girl Scouts, are invited to attend. They should bring their own tableware for lunch. "Kidnap" Angle Fizzles In Case Of Thief Suspects RED BLUFF, Calif., July 26 W The "abduction angle" fiz zled somewhat yesterday in the case of two youths arrested here after transporting two juvenile girls from Bend, Ore. The prisoners, J. B. Rich and Norman Betts, are in the Tehama county Jail charged with burg lary and armed robbery at Sa lem, Ore., where the warrants were issued. They were found asleep in a car in a country road near here. Sheriff James N. Froome reported Rich belliger ently said: "If we had been awake It would have been different. There would have been a couple, of dead cop pers around here." They threw the car keys away when arrested, Just to show their annoyance, Froome said. But they offered no real resistance, although armed with a pistol. Both are carnival workers and, Investigation indicated, had met the two girls about a week ago at Bend, Ore. The girls, aged 14 and 16, are in the county Jail here. Their parents came for them but the sheriff refused to release them. Sheriff Froome says Rich talk ed quite a bit last night, and, during the Inquiry, it was brought out that one of the eirls had helped the men repaint the stolen car in wnicn tney . were traveling. Rich, according to the sheriff, also claimed to have been inti mate with the. girls, but the girls deny this. Whether other charges will be filed against the men had not been decided. Sheriff Froome was eoine to confer later with F.'B. I. men who questioned Rich and Betts. They were undecided whether to file Dyer and Mann act charges. Froome said the pistol the man Tax Study Committee Members Appointed SALEM, July 25 CM Gover nor McKay today named three members of the Legislature's tax study committee. Those appointed by the gover nor are Mrs. Louise Humphrey Portland, staff member of Ore gon Business arid Tax Research, Earl Day, Medford, former state tax commissioner; and Kelley Loe, Portland, publicity man and legislative representative for the State Federation of Labor. The other members of the com mittee, who were appointed by the president of the Senate and the Speaker of the House, are had was stolen from a Salem home in the alleged burglary.
