For 12-Month Period
According to a statement Issued
by A. S. Cummins, president, The
California Oregon Power com
pany reports net income for the
twelve months ending June 30,
1949, of $2,109,581 as compared
with net Income of $1,829,254 for
the corresponding period ending
june win, an increase oi l.j'e.
Net Income for the twelve
months ending June 30, 1949, was
equivalent to a.o times preferred
stock dividend requirements, and,
after deduction of such dividends,
was equivalent to $3.08 per share
on the 550,000 shares of outstand
ing common stock.
Net Income for the six months
ending June 30, 1949, amounted
to $1,059,414, an Increase of
15.70 over that of the same
period of 1948.

Calvin H. Baird returned to duty
Monday following a week's va
cation. Most of the time he spent
at his home in Roseburg but
he also made, two fishing trips
to Winchester Bay and reported

to build themselves a state park
out of 92 acres of timbcrland in
a single day.
More than 500 islanders have
volunteered for the Grange-sponsored

Lines Temporarily Halt

Two-thirds of New York City's
vast underground transit system
was paralysed for nearly an hour
by a power failure Friday night,
stranding thousands of passen
gers on hot, stuffy subway trains.
It was 87 degrees above
ground, and hotter in the breeze
less transit caverns below. But
subway riders took it calmly.
They were, as one policeman on
emergency duty put It, "So
pounded down by the heat that
they didn't even groan."
The power failure, caused by
a short circuit, cut off signal
lights over 150 miles of under
ground track. Safety rules re
quired all trains on the lines to
stop. The signal lights were baok
on In about an hour, and normal
service resumed.

with eight acts of treason through

she had committed any treason
able act, although he said she
seemed to feel there was some

on payrolls.
Food processing, construction,
lumbering and retail trade are
the most likely prospects for any
one looking for work, the report
said.
The commission reported:
1 Construction employ m e n t
has gone up 10 per cent since
April; should climb as much
more before the fall peak.
2 Food processing plants will
have a total of only slightly be
low last year's 26,500 top num
ber of workers.
3 Lumbering expects about 7
per cent more men on the job
for August-September but notes
the industry still is 12,000 jobs
behind the 1948 level at this time
last year.
4 Textiles and apparel plants
expect October will see 9 per cent
more persons on tne payrolls
than In June.
5 Retail tradesmen expect an
UDSwine in business will need
about 9 per cent more workers
in uctober than in June.
6 Transportation and com'
munication employers see
slight drop by late summer.
7 Wholesale firms believe
payrolls will go up slightly for
