tlon of the old Oregon trail for
the first time.
According to Meacham who in
troduced the speaker, Dr. Drlggs
has been speaking at various lo
cations along old pioneer trails
since 1!)37. Hefore that time, he
was a professor of English edu
cation at New York university.
Me has written 37 books, many of
them dealing with Die history and
founding of the West.
Dr. Drlggs termed the Oregon
trail one oi ine outstanding tho-
rougmnres oi History and de
plored the lack of Interest shown
by many of the inhabitants who
reside along its borders.
"While enroute to Roseburg
from southern Oregon, I was
frankly disappointed to find little
indication that local persons are
aware of the Importance of Ap
plegnte trail," ho said.
The speaker emphasized the
importance of historical areas to
local businessmen by relating the
story of the restoration of Cali
fornia's Fort Sutter and the an
nual $!500,000 In tourist trade the
city of Sacramento receives as a
result. However, Dr. Drlggs said
he found Instances In every state
where historical resources have
been neglected.
Following Dr. Drlggs' address,
Meacham challenged the 5(i per
sons present to see that all of the
Applegale trail markers are
erected In Douglas county. The
challenge was accepted by
ueorge w. uimicK or Koseuurg,
regional vice-president of the
American Pioneer Trails associ
ation. The visiting party is touring
the state in cooperation with the
travel Information department of
the slate highway department.
Dr. Drlggs will continue to tour
central Oregon before leaving for
a Laramie, Wyoming, celebration.
