Globetrotters' Clown Adds Spice To Baseball Games Played By Negroes Ed Hamman, probably the greatest clown In all sportsdom, will appear as an added attraction with the crack Harlem Globetrotters baseball team when the Negro diamond wonders face the Umpqua Chiefs at Flnlay Field tonight In an exhibition contest, starting at 8 O ClOCK. ! Hamman, a white youth, has made a big name for himself traveling with such athletic teams as the Globetrotters, Indianapo lis Clowns, Havana La Palomas. Cincinnati Crescents and others In baseball and with the Harlem Globetrotters in basketball. His hilarious sideshow Is known from coast to coast and he is al ways a welcome apoearance be cause he is constantly adding new stunts and keeps his pre sentation new and fresh. Hamman carries a number of props with him to add to his fun-making and has the assistance of members of the Globetrotters to act as his assistants. The play ers love nothing better than to get "Into the act." The Ohio youth has rejected numerous offers from circuses, theatrical shows and other en. tertalnment enterprises to keep his clowning in sports. This stems from the fact that he long has been associated with baseball as player, manager and team own er and loves the game. Rose has filed suit In Circuit Court to recover dam ages of $10,802 for an alleged beating he took at the hands of Knute D. Kershner a truck driver for D. A.- Matson, also named as a defendant in the suit. Rose alleges that on Oct. 22, 1948. while he was driving west on Highway 99 near Azalea, he passed a truck being operated by Kershner. Shortly after he had passed the truck, he stopped his car at the side of the highway and had descended. He asserts that "Kershner then halted his truck, descended, and "while acting in the course of the defendant s business, ap proached the plaintiff and with out warnine. cause or nrovoca' tion, unlawfully and unjustly as saulted the plaintiff with great force and violence." He claims the defendant struck him on the face, head and left clavicle. Rose stated he had previously suffered a fracture of the left clavicle, a fact the defendant, knew, and at the time tne attend ant struck him the Injury had not yet 'healed and was still wired together and bandaged. Tod riflemen from the Pacific Northwest and California will vie for honors on the newly completed National Guard rifle range, located 11 miles easi hi Roseburg on the North Umpqua road. Sanctioned bv the National Rifle Association, the match will be conducted strictly by the As sociation's rules and regulations governing such events. The local range is constructed to handle five riflemen at a time. firing at 200-, 300- and 500-yard targets. Army type. No admission will be charged for the match and plenty of free parking space will be available, Gilkeson said. First Story Listed For T Series On KRNR "The Fisherman's Wife" will be the first storv told on t h e YMCA story hour, starting Mon day at 4.45 over KRNK and con tinuing the rest of the summer every Monday and Wednesday. Mrs. Sam Warg, member of the program committee, assures prospective listeners this will be "a very Interesting story" and all children of elementary school age are invited to listen. Mrs. Mary Eastman, the story teller for the week, will unfold the tale of "Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp" on Wednes day. The following week, Mrs. E. Hall will tell "How the Elephant Got his Trunk" on July 25 and the following Wednesday will tell the experience of "The Little Engine that Could." KRNR will air other stories over the YMCA story hour throughout the remainder of the summer.
